Hey. What do I do if there are no defined goals in my current job and inflation in my country was basically 25% and company taxes were increased by 5% too (basically my salary has inflated away and I feel useless doing what I do)? Is there a different way than changing of my job? https://tradingeconomics.com/lithuania/inflation-cpi I ask about this because if there are no goals then I can't tell the management that I achieved something. And that means that I can't talk about anything at all.

If you really want to stay at your current job and not search for something new or become a freelancer, you can try talking to the managers and ask for precise KPI that you need to meet in order to get a raise or a promotion.

I actually had a colleague like that. He just finished his university and applied for a software engineer job. He immediately asked the HR folk about what precisely he needs to be doing to become a senior software engineer in that company. The management was actually ecstatic and supported his enthusiasm fully.

The thing is that I'm alone in my "team" and I'm a remote employee. I was already asking for a salary raise half a year ago and they said "we're a start-up and we can't". I'm already senior by some ways and by others very senior (I do clojure for several years at this point) and this wasn't even brought up as a response to me. They know I'm pretty alright (maybe I'm really a junior in some other ways but it wasn't brought up as a reason). So that means that whatever I'd say they simply shrug off as "too much". Also we don't have HR as the company is quite small. But there is this disconnection. 😕 Also they said "we can't pay as much as it's paid in banks". But well... Clojure people are not something that you can find in every grocery store. So idk. > He immediately asked the HR folk about what precisely he needs to be doing to become a senior software engineer in that company I think I'll to this one in my next job

chances are, if your wage gains are being wiped out by inflation, the same is happening to your colleagues. It may not be easy to break the taboo about speaking about pay and salaries with them, but if you are all feeling the pain of inadequate compensation right now, then I'd recommend you try to start conversations about negotiating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_bargaining rather than separately. Your coworkers know more about the situation than we do, so they will have more informed perspectives about how to deal with the problem of inadequate compensation.

I know very little about labor law in your country, so make sure you find out more information about the rights and protections afforded to collective representation as you start those conversations.

Martynas Maciulevičius15:01:19

I agree but in my case I'm alone in my "team". I also work remotely through a company. So labour laws don't apply. I work on my own component and I don't really have peers. The only workers that I interact with are back-end devs and I work on a database-like component. So it's really not apples to apples comparison as I can't compare their skills with mine. They can't read my code as they don't know Clojure. I basically couch them sometimes on why and what I'm doing as they don't really know what database design they sometimes want.

Given your responses, it seems that the answer to "Is there a different way than changing of my job?" is a resounding "no".

If there are no expected goals to meet and no response from the company, then it's down to you alone. It may be that the company is only focused on the day to day business or given the economic situation, focused on keeping the business viable. I would set aside some work time to advance your career e.g create your own projects that expand your experience and skills, either work specific or related open source projects. You can keep asking the company about products or services that would be valuable to them, or ask them about inefficient parts of the business processes and create solutions that would help. Although it seems that this kind of communication s very limited from the company. Also try to find similar companies as a source of inspiration for additional projects and demonstrate them to the company If pay is insufficient then it would seem the only option is to look for an opportunity in another company, although also consider that many ( but not all) companies may be struggling due to the general economic pressures.

You should probably just do other interviews and, if you get some good offers, show them to your current employer

andrea.crotti20:01:50

Some employers will only listen when you threaten to leave.

andrea.crotti20:01:12

But it might not that they really can't, but you'd find out at least

100% what @U0524T275 said. With most employers I worked with, the only way to get raise is tell them I got XXX more offer from different company. I never had company saying okay go, even if they couldn't match the offer they offered raise. But then I had offer that payed more so it was to late for raise since they didn't listen before interviews.
