I've created another PR on Spacemacs repository to https://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs/pull/15388. Feedback is welcome. I've removed the github layer from the https://github.com/practicalli/spacemacs.d configuration, as the github layer doesnt really add anything over the git layer. If you used Grip to preview GitHub flavoured markdown, then you should keep the github layer.
