Yes, it's really not a cult. You can watch some Lloyd Evens on YouTube if you want to find out more about what a real cult is about. Like having a secret book with how to micromanage followers..
I was told yesterday that apparently I stopped the rewrite of a part of our codebase apparently by uttering one single word. The word was not ânoâ, as I was not in the position to decide, but âwhyâ.
Itâs such a powerful word.
Asking it five times is even more powerful⌠https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_whys
Demonstrated by Bob Dylan in 1965: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHGwfvqeWAM&t=110s
The âA parting exampleâ example also seems like it plays into the âfunctional core, imperative shellâ sort of thinking, yeah? Which I think is generally advisable, desirable and attainable in Clojure. Decomplection via pure functions and minimal data dependencies.
But nothing is without tradeoffs đ Every new function is a layer of indirection, and on a big app like at my workplace (and probably Ardoqâs, too), just navigating a function call chain can start to become tedious and even error prone, when you introduce stuff like dynamic dispatch instead of direct function calls.
So, sometimes you want to segregate things into yet another set of functions in order to have them be pure, but you feel bad about adding âanother set of functionsâ.
Just regularly declutter your source code. Ask yourself: does this code spark joy? If not, let it know that you appreciated all itâs done for you and then delete it.
Good morning đ Lovely rainy weather here
Whereâs here?
Northern Denmark
Iâve been longing for autumn!
Welllll Iâd say that Northern Jutland is Northern Denmark, being the northmost part of the country. I get your dig, though đ
Itâs funny, northern Zeeland was virtually non-existant to me before Iâd lived in Copenhagen for quite some years. Itâs still very diffuse
âRich people live here, I guessâ
âItâs still very diffuseâ - Thatâs how I feel about the rest of country. My geographic knowledge of Denmark basically extends to the 5-6 largest cities and whatever stations were on the outbound trains from Helsingør.
But then you also have people who grew up in Copenhagen who have scarcely visited any part that canât be reached by S-trains ;)
It does feel uncivilized not to have the S-trains at hand!
Do you guys use anything in particular for reading e.g. blog articles aloud from your browser?
I find that I have lots of bookmarks of interesting articles, and lots of occasions where Iâm doing manual work, and could be listening to interesting stuff at the same time.
Bonus points for easy, succinct controls!
Iâm testing out Mac OSâs âSpeak selected text when key is pressedâ. The voice, with its cadence, pronunciation, and such, is not perfect, but fine. But I lack more fine grained controls, and ideally, Iâd like to tell my tool something like âRead this page aloud, obviously without reading ads and such aloud, stick to the main bit. Oh, go half speed. Now, go double speed. I missed that last bit, rewind one paragraph. Stop. Start.â Things like this.
With the controls being as hands-off as possible, since Iâll probably have wet or dirty hands at the time.
amen brother
wish my kid knew itâs the weekend as well, but itâs like he doesnât know how to relax đ
chillll little man
