Yes, it's really not a cult. You can watch some Lloyd Evens on YouTube if you want to find out more about what a real cult is about. Like having a secret book with how to micromanage followers..

Good Morning!

Good morning!

slipset06:08:01

I was told yesterday that apparently I stopped the rewrite of a part of our codebase apparently by uttering one single word. The word was not “no”, as I was not in the position to decide, but “why”.

It’s such a powerful word.

paulspencerwilliams06:08:46

Asking it five times is even more powerful… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_whys

simongray07:08:07

Or maybe not, but this reminded me of that scene 😛

paulspencerwilliams07:08:48

Haha, gosh, I would not have wanted to interview him 😆

The “A parting example” example also seems like it plays into the “functional core, imperative shell” sort of thinking, yeah? Which I think is generally advisable, desirable and attainable in Clojure. Decomplection via pure functions and minimal data dependencies.

reefersleep08:08:14

But nothing is without tradeoffs 🙂 Every new function is a layer of indirection, and on a big app like at my workplace (and probably Ardoq’s, too), just navigating a function call chain can start to become tedious and even error prone, when you introduce stuff like dynamic dispatch instead of direct function calls.

reefersleep08:08:10

So, sometimes you want to segregate things into yet another set of functions in order to have them be pure, but you feel bad about adding “another set of functions”.

reefersleep08:08:18

It’s a never-ending balancing act

Just regularly declutter your source code. Ask yourself: does this code spark joy? If not, let it know that you appreciated all it’s done for you and then delete it.

You know that I love nothing more than red numbers in my PRs!

Good morning 🙂 Lovely rainy weather here

paulspencerwilliams08:08:40

Where’s here?

reefersleep08:08:36

Northern Denmark

reefersleep08:08:02

I’ve been longing for autumn!

simongray09:08:35

*Northern Jutland. It’s sunny in the eastern part of the country :P

reefersleep09:08:38

Welllll I’d say that Northern Jutland is Northern Denmark, being the northmost part of the country. I get your dig, though 😛

reefersleep09:08:19

It’s funny, northern Zeeland was virtually non-existant to me before I’d lived in Copenhagen for quite some years. It’s still very diffuse

reefersleep09:08:36

“Rich people live here, I guess”

simongray10:08:00

“It’s still very diffuse” - That’s how I feel about the rest of country. My geographic knowledge of Denmark basically extends to the 5-6 largest cities and whatever stations were on the outbound trains from Helsingør.

simongray10:08:54

But then you also have people who grew up in Copenhagen who have scarcely visited any part that can’t be reached by S-trains ;)

reefersleep08:08:55

It does feel uncivilized not to have the S-trains at hand!

reefersleep09:08:17

Do you guys use anything in particular for reading e.g. blog articles aloud from your browser?

reefersleep09:08:56

I find that I have lots of bookmarks of interesting articles, and lots of occasions where I’m doing manual work, and could be listening to interesting stuff at the same time.

reefersleep09:08:21

Bonus points for easy, succinct controls!

reefersleep09:08:29

I’m testing out Mac OS’s “Speak selected text when key is pressed”. The voice, with its cadence, pronunciation, and such, is not perfect, but fine. But I lack more fine grained controls, and ideally, I’d like to tell my tool something like “Read this page aloud, obviously without reading ads and such aloud, stick to the main bit. Oh, go half speed. Now, go double speed. I missed that last bit, rewind one paragraph. Stop. Start.” Things like this.

reefersleep09:08:06

With the controls being as hands-off as possible, since I’ll probably have wet or dirty hands at the time.

reefersleep09:08:38

wish my kid knew it’s the weekend as well, but it’s like he doesn’t know how to relax 🙂

reefersleep09:08:49
