For Strange Loop, is it worth staying in St.Louis a couple of days after the conf for sightseeing? Or just as well to hit another US town (if time is limited)?
aaronm: Beer and microbreweries are certainly interesting. Other than that, a colleague that's joining has never been to the US, so we were thinking about limiting time in st. louis and rather head for some of the big landmarks and similar elsewhere - maybe take a trip to Chicago or even take a short flight to elsewhere in the US - since there doesn't seem to be all that much around St. Louis (unless I'm missing something here).
as far as landmarks, at least set aside some time to go to the Gateway Arch, it needs to be seen in person
aaronm: Yeah, will definitely stay 1-2 days, and catch the arch and a few other things.
there are several good local breweries: http://www.beeradvocate.com/place/city/32/ (I quite like Civil Life and 4 Hands personally)
And on the St. Louis culture note, the most distinct thing I’ve encountered on the food realm is Provel Cheese Pizza (Not Provolone, a different cheese). Toasted Ravioli and another dish that’s nacho cheese and fries and meat are the other things I’ve only had in the area.
As far as St. Louis food goes, I recommend trying an Italian place on 'The Hill'. I lived in St. Louis back in the early 90s.
Totally turned me on to cracker-thin pizza and frozen custard the latter of which I miss pretty much always.
by the way, @stian, thanks for mentioning strangeloop, I hadn’t realized registration was today
I just registered and booked my hotel! Very excited! squee
