and if you keep adding it… wait, isn’t it that the cup will gradually become transparent and you get more problems? (per “International problem solving guide”)

dharrigan10:12:14

I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it!

per what I rmb of @UE21H2HHD (I think?), please be reminded to be civilized - one-on-one only, thank you 🙃

lread14:12:57

My intent is to always be civil, but I'm sure I fail sometimes!

lread14:12:37

Reminds me of a trick I sometimes used back in the day. When folks were looking for someone to blame for something gone wrong, I'd say "yeah, I'll take the hit". They'd look at me confused. And then I'd explain "no, we're good, I've got a scapegoat clause in my contract". This often seemed to diffuse the situation and let us focus on solving the problem.

lemontea14:12:17

@UE21H2HHD now that’s what I would call a leader 👍 (Aside from some next level psychology mastery)

lread15:12:52

Well, I wouldn't give me that much credit! simple_smile Seemed to work well when folks had a sense of humour and were in the mood for it.

lemontea14:12:46

@U4P4NREBY oh, really really sorry to hear that… so it’s first calamity at work, and then in private life… Usually when predicaments like that happen, I would deliberately slow down and adopt some form of acceptance + minimalism. Maybe some gratitude for what I do have (like, you know, caring friends).

lemontea14:12:18

it’s like trying to rhyme/sync with the flow of the universe

simongray14:12:45

@U6L5FFL95 Thank you! Well, it’s all that + dealing with a complicated move to a new flat at the same time. 😛

simongray14:12:34

And my wife who is just as stressed at work + dealing with a pregnancy. So naturally, that also means I need to deal with the wife 😉

simongray14:12:46

I had to take medical leave for 6 months back in ~2015 since I was no longer able to sleep at night and had constant chest pain, so I am quite familiar with chronic stress and anxiety. Fortunately, I am pretty adept at dealing with it nowadays. I don’t suffer from insomnia or any other stress-related symptoms at the moment, so I am not too worried. Stress is natural in peak periods; it’s the potentially chronic nature of it that eventually fucks people up.

Ben Sless14:12:57

(un)luckily I am fueled by ww2 combat drugs most days so I can slog through most situations

simongray14:12:42

Methamphetamine?

Ben Sless14:12:16

Next best legal option, Ritalin

simongray14:12:37

same same, but different 🙂

@U4P4NREBY that’s… a lots. (Also: sounds like a classical cascading stressor scenario) Give you a virtual hug

We were supposed to be going to friends for xmas dinner but two of them tested positive for COVID and the whole family is isolating now. We're all supposed to be going to Hawaii on the 4th, for a week, for the scattering of her mother's ashes so I hope they all get better quickly! I hope you and yours get better quickly too @U4P4NREBY!

one thing I learned this (or last?) year: more people than you think are going through seriously difficult stuff in their life, they just try their best to put on a “everything-is-normal” mask

lemontea14:12:43

and being emotionally open and honest can get you pretty far 🙂

lemontea14:12:52

(is it naive? maybe. But I am naive - I believe it is worth a shot)

simongray14:12:57

> more people than you think are going through seriously difficult stuff in their life, they just try their best to put on a “everything-is-normal” mask Not me! I rant whenever I get the chance.

simongray14:12:58

I believe in that kind of transparency and emotional honesty too, @U6L5FFL95.

Now that the hype is settling, a bit, wrt chatgpt and other ai assistants, what's your position in using it as a programming aid?

orestis14:12:26

My day to day work is so domain specific that I can’t envision an automated tool being able to help.

Ben Sless14:12:18

We all have the annoying boilerplate parts besides the domain specific. Could it be useful there?

simongray14:12:53

I like the tailor-made example code it can generate. Sometimes they’re wrong, but often they’re not. It’s a good starting point in any case.

simongray14:12:14

Faster than finding out through Google in my experience.

orestis14:12:08

I’ll have to remember next time I need to Google something, but usually most of the work is reading the code and figuring out where to put stuff.

Ben Sless15:12:47

Ask it to implement some algorithm, you'll be surprised

orestis15:12:31

I haven’t had to implement an algorithm for years now :)

Ben Sless15:12:28

I'm trying to see if it can write a type checker for Clojure code 😄

Ben Sless15:12:42

Or even ask it to sketch out an idea for a piece of code

borkdude15:12:14

imo chatgpt is a bigger "threat" to jobs where you have to produce fuzzy texts, like essays on history, politics, philosophy, etc. vs. programming or math

👍 1
borkdude15:12:01

as an aid, I'm not that impressed, I'm also not inclined to use Github Copilot

orestis15:12:31

I like coding, code reviews, not so much. I don’t want to make my job have even more code reviews. At least I trust my team co-members :)

Ben Sless15:12:32

Brb going to ask it to explain Fanged Numena

borkdude15:12:40

it is fun though, so as a fun tool, I like it

simongray15:12:38

@U04V15CAJ we noticed 😛

😆 1
borkdude15:12:52

I mean, if you make up a sick plot, it's hilarious to see it expand on that ;)

simongray15:12:24

It is very entertaining, I agree 😄

seancorfield17:12:18

I have Copilot enabled on my personal laptop and use it with OSS projects -- it's actually fairly good at inventing tests for Clojure code (but tends to insert too many )). I do not have it enabled on my work desktop, so I can't speak to how it works with "real-world" application code in specific domains. My main concern with these AI services is that they can generate extremely plausible but completely wrong output -- so you still have to know what you're doing, and I think a lot of people will assume that the output will be factually correct, and that could lead to all sorts of danger/harm.
