That's totally fine, that's what communication is for. My general recommendation is to start asking questions when you're completely stuck on something for 15-30 minutes. Not shorter - to avoid pestering people with questions you can definitely solve yourself. Not longer - because there's a good chance that after 15-30 minutes you won't be able to solve that problem without spending many more hours on it, so it's worth to ask others. And if people don't want or can't answer - they just won't, so that's fine.

Ah, and I just spent 2 hours trying to make a custom pretty printer with fipp and its pprint-document
