this might be a stretch, but ... is there a way to get the vim paredit keymap working?

cool, I'll check it out and see.
Posted earlier, now have a repro. If Clojure 1.10.1 is used running IntelliJ/Cursive from Windows, any exception thrown in the REPL will cause this exception to occur in the IDE, and basically renders the REPL window unusable.
