But I imagine falling “inside” a bike is much more painful than falling off a skateboard

afaik it only rarely happens. It's far easier to go "over the bars" and kiss the pavement

I once heard that skateboard is easy to pick up and hard to master; vice versa with bmx

I for sure would have trouble “unlearning” pedestrian biking! Having done it for all of my life.
