I confess I havenât really watched Babylon 5 since the 90s but I still have fairly vivid memories of Mr Garibaldi really liking Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half century.
Morning! Nothing like Cert errors on Prod and a phone call to start your day early đ
i had one of those a few weeks ago... always fun
Makes you wide awake without coffee đ
Yikes! That's never a fun way to get going in the morning @javahippie
Yeah, different team upgraded their certs and had an error in their chain, not much we were able to do from our sideâŠ
More floffy morning:
Got new bug friends in my home basil plant
Can you guess what those are?
Ladybugs? đ
Indeed!
I'm not a cruel person, but I won't lie: watching them decimate the aphids that have plagued this plant for weeks was both thrilling and profoundly satisfactory
Cool! Iâm jealous. I needed them this year and they didnât come. The aphids were super strong and killed my basil and two planters of grandmaâs mint.
No ladybugs â no mojitos
I live on the 4th floor, so the ladybugs didn't come spontaneously. So I hid the plant in a hedge down in my street for a few days. I brought a ladybug back with it, which didn't stay in my apartment, but fortunately took the time to lay eggs.
The only mistake I made was relying on tropical rainfalls to water the plant. They didn't suffice, so it came back very dehydrated.
Quite an adventure
The larvae are even fiercer
On the photo I posted, the yellow dot is an aphid trying to escape. (It didn't)
I read that in some species, some larvae can eat a 100 aphids per day (I don't know where they put them)
OTOH, aphids have such incredible reproductive powers that I'm amazed the natural world hasn't turned into a giant heap of aphids
Lucky us đ
Sometimes the natural world takes time to regulate itself though. It seems that bacteria and fungi took millions of years to learn how to degrade tree bark efficiently, so for million of years dead tree trunks were piling up and up, eventually forming the coal beds of the Carboniferous period
Indeed. Some processes are very slow. I don't think of them as regulative. But on the bug level, keeping one species from overwhelming the whole system. It is very quick. Abundance of aphids -> abundance of lady bugs. Too many lady bugs? Something else, eating lady bugs will thrive.
At this point, it's mandatory to mention Lotka-Volterra https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotka%E2%80%93Volterra_equations
Haha I didn't mean to distract you
I get plate tectonics and I know the mountains here and on the US East coast are old, but TILÂ https://twitter.com/otfrom/status/1416043797587320836
