Re: Dividend Finance job posting at clojure mailing list – does "Clojure enthusiasts who can work on site" mean "on the actual construction sites", given they are in business of financing solar panel installations? 🙂

jgh18:05:56

yeah you go sit in the sun and sip margaritas while the crew installs panels

fellshard18:05:43

Hammock time, I suppose 😛

From personal experience, I find hacking for a couple hours pre-dawn, a morning hike/snorkeling/swimming session, lunch, and then more hacking when it’s hot mid day to be an excellent way to ship good stuff (including clojure based stuff)

bja20:05:15

Maybe more people would let the parens fade away if they had a margarita or two first

@jgh I have a story to tell that is somehow related to "it's gameable". When I was hired by a company I worked for until recently I was living in Norway. I was the first remote employee in the company, so they said "all right, you've got another offer from the local company, just add up your salary and the cost of the benefits the company has to provide under Norwegian law, and we'll pay you that". I've done that (and it turned out that typical employee sick leave policy in Norway is very expensive if one buys it from an insurance company), so I've got a nice sum in my contract.

Next step: moved to Malta. Boom.

jgh21:05:25

well done

jgh21:05:48

alternative method, set up an llc. or an inc. and call yourself a consultant

dottedmag21:05:22

That involves searching for clients, I suppose.

jgh21:05:58

i guess, but you can also have one client.

dottedmag21:05:14

Ah, you mean hiding your real location?

dottedmag21:05:19

Yes, could be done.

vemv21:05:04

btw being an Inc makes it more feasible to have just one client. Otherwise client side can face legal risks

jgh21:05:04

You don’t have to hide your location, I just mean that it’s easier to come across in a position of strength if you’re “independent”.

jgh21:05:40

what do you mean vemv

vemv21:05:41

Being incorporated makes it less likely you're seen by the authorities as an employee in disguise

dottedmag21:05:48

@jgh They may receive very pointed questions from IRD "aren't you hiring these people and disguising them?"

jgh21:05:54

oh, yeah.

jgh21:05:17

they dont want companies hiring “contractors” who aren’t really independent

jgh21:05:54

thats a separate issue i guess…the equal pay thing is more about leverage if the company is being stingy, i think

vemv21:05:58

> https://dev.to/sam_ferree/why-i-think-cost-of-living-pay-for-remote-workers-is-bs-5b68 probably every point can be discussed to death without clear answer. Side observation: showing publicly lack of nuance/respect when it comes to opinions invites one to think you're not a very pleasant peer to work with

jgh22:05:02

at the same time blogging seems to need sort of clickbaity/opinionated pieces to work. If this dragged on to a 3,000-word debate about the pros and cons i bet nobody would care.
