I just discovered that you can check executables from the command line using file , e.g.

file /opt/homebrew/Cellar/openjdk/19.0.1/libexec/openjdk.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java

Showing the ”kind” column in Activity Monitor can also enlighten you of problems like this.
