Give him a magazine CD with a Linux distro, that takes 1 hour to install but then doesn't boot. That's my teenage experience.

dharrigan05:06:51

My first experience of Linux was at Uni, remotely mounting (after a floppy drive initial kernel boot - yes at that time you could get the kernel on some floppies) the source code from the mirror service at Kent (from my halls of residence room in Manchester) and doing an install. That was exciting!

plexus05:06:47

The way I remember it is installing is fine, except if you meant to keep that windows partition, in that case... oops? And then the long process starts of trying to get startx to work.

A CD install of Linux sounds relatively easy.. try creating 83 floppy disks and only discovering one of the disks is faulty and when you inset the 79th disk 😂 Teaches lessons about validation and redundancy Installing Linux from a tape drive was a high evolution 😁

Good morning from Berlin :flag-de:

I believe one of the first linux install I did was on a 10 (or 20)Mb hard disk. And I remember having to make som hard choices as to what to install in order to have room for all the important bits.

If I would have a linux laptop that was better hardware than a current Macbook M1, I'd go with nixos probably to just start with a clean slate and be forever reproducible.

Ben Sless17:06:20

If I could only find out how to port this portable configuration 😞

orestis09:06:21

@raymcdermott “floppy drives? We dreamed of floppy drives. In my day we'd have to copy the Linux kernel from printed magazines, in hex”

I couldn't find a Monty python emoji.. 😂

genRaiy09:06:58

Hex? Luxury...

plexus09:06:51

this whole conversation does make me wonder what the median age is in this channel 🧓

seancorfield19:06:50

When Linux was first released, I had graduated from university almost a decade earlier 🙂

Ben Sless19:06:17

So you had a good 10 years before The Event

thomas10:06:23

thomas10:06:40

ordnungswidrig10:06:05

I do feel like the popularisation of the internet is perhaps the biggest technological landmark in my lifetime. And I’m pretty happy that my awkward preteen self didn’t end up on somebody’s Instagram!

reefersleep12:06:57

Being young in today’s world of social media has potential to be really rough 😕
