newcomer to spacemacs here. I'm very excited about it, but something is frustrating me: I'm used to press ESC a lot so I'm sure I'm in normal mode, but it seems like ESC k does a paredit-kill. Is it that ESC triggers some paredit behaviors? C-h k ESC shows that ESC would just switch to normal mode

the funny thing is that I quickly try to fix it with ESC u, which changes the text to uppercase, and so on...

Esc in some terminal emulators emulates meta.

so, ESC b would typed quickly enough would emulate M-b
