Afternoon all! I want to introduce myself to try to connect with the Clojure community here in the UK. I'm quite young and work as a platform engineer (3 yrs in a startup, 2 for a big company). I've been playing around with programming in my free-time for years at this point trying to find the one I like. When I discovered functional programming and Clojure last year I fell in love with it as it just fits how my mind works and I don't feel like I'm "fighting the paradigm". I have https://codeberg.org/xylon and I've written https://readtheorg.xylon.me.uk/index.html. I think I need to start looking for a new job as my current one is soul-destroyingly boring so I realised I should at-least reach out and see if there's any companies in the UK that might have a job for a junior Clojure dev. What is the best way for me to make friends and find out about companies doing Clojure in the UK?
I'd say this is probably one of the best places for that. there is also #CBJ5CGE0G where lots of us also are and #C050UG324GM
I grew up in Sussex but I moved out to Wiltshire this year. Where abouts are others?
I used to be Winchester/Southampton based, but left 6.5 years ago, back to :flag-nl: .
Ah Winchester is a lovely old city π . Don't know much about the Netherlands but heard it's a nice place.
Someday I will have to get you guys to help me tidy up this procedural mess I've made: https://codeberg.org/xylon/xyloobservations/src/commit/6ffd5d0d70388e5df89a2d5acbcf4e3f1d22c9d3/src/clj/xyloobservations/queuefunctions.clj#L94
def inside let π
I lived in Horsham in W. Sx for years...
I'm in Redhill, not too far from Sussex.
@U04V70XH6 π I lived in Horsham for the first 24 yrs of my life!
@U0FR9C8RZ you moved to the UK recently?
I've actually been here since I was born.
the flag next to my name is a sign of support rather than origin
I have no personal connection to Ukraine.
@U043HLWSYUQ I was in Horsham from '74 to '89 and went to Collyer's back when it was still a boys' grammar school π The town has changed a lot since I grew up there. My grandma lived there until she passed in 2000 and my mum lived there for a few more years after that until she moved to W. Chiltington, so I used to go back and visit a lot.
Ah I missed you by a couple of years. My brother still works there as curator of Horsham museum.
Oh, that's very cool!
yeah he was on Bargain Hunt
Welcome to Clojure @U043HLWSYUQ π I was in Horsham 1 day a few months ago, last time I went for a 1 off occasion into an office for work (I usually WFH now - I'm in south west London). (no sadly we're not hiring right now)
