Iced coffee for me, so I dont sweat buckets traversing London and into the belly of the wharf

agile_geek07:08:27

I'm traversing the country and into the belly of the wharf...see you there @jonpither

yogidevbear07:08:19

Good luck, you two

jasonbell08:08:22

@agile_geek feeling any better today dude?

agile_geek08:08:22

@jasonbell not really...it's going to be a looooong day

jasonbell08:08:44

I can imagine. I got food poisoning once on Great Titchfield Street, spent most of the afternoon talking to god on the great white telephone. The journey from Paddington to Reading was the worst.

agile_geek08:08:22

At least it's 'only' a cold

jasonbell08:08:47

Just don’t ask for a first class ticket to Nottingham.

agile_geek08:08:51

Was that Halls Soothers or another menthol lozenge ?

jasonbell08:08:01

Something like that.

agile_geek08:08:11

Just keeping eyes open is really hard. I managed on weekend due to lots off free live music and excitement. Including my 80 year old mother hanging out of a low flying microlite throwing confetti (bio degradable obviously).

jasonbell08:08:17

What the confetti or the microlite?

agile_geek08:08:44

@jasonbell I think the confetti but who knows, would have been more exciting if microlite started dissolving in the rain!

agile_geek08:08:31

Nice to listen to my multiply talented cousins playing live too.

yogidevbear08:08:54

Thomas has been rather quiet lately

maleghast09:08:14

Morning everyone 🙂

maleghast09:08:46

My first whole day actually working from home and I have filter coffee and noisy kids (it’s RAINING here)

jonpither09:08:43

WFH + Kids = Headphones

agile_geek09:08:15

WFH = 200% less tired = 100% more efficient & 20% cheaper

yogidevbear09:08:38

WFH + kid + excitable dog + new puppy that wants to chew everything = ‼️

yogidevbear09:08:11

The in-laws better arrive soon 😉

maleghast10:08:40

@jonpither - You read my mind… 😉

yogidevbear10:08:46

@dominicm Nice PS4 game collection you've got going there

yogidevbear10:08:53

Cute dog too 🙂

dominicm10:08:40

It's surprising how quickly those games pile up.

yogidevbear10:08:59

I've been going backwards and forwards between choosing between an Xbox One S 1TB and the PS4 Pro

yogidevbear10:08:09

As a joint birthday gift for my son and I

yogidevbear10:08:19

I'm leaning towards the Xbox at the moment though

dominicm10:08:55

As a "filthy casual", I like the Playstation. There's much less of an expectation that you're paying for online, although it is clearly coming (unlike the PS3 which was clear nobody was forced to pay).

dominicm10:08:53

I used to recommend that people who like to play casual get a PlayStation, and people who wanted to play online & regular (and didn't care about the subscription cost therefore), go Xbox.

yogidevbear10:08:29

But you can play Xbox without the subscription, yes? Just not multiplayer

dominicm10:08:52

On playstation you can go online/multiplayer without a subscription.

yogidevbear10:08:07

Really? Even on PS4?

dominicm10:08:50

On PS4 it varies from game to game. Destiny is free, with a requirement to pay for certain zones. GTA online requires subscription.

dominicm10:08:52

yeah, looks like PS4 pretty much adopted the xbox model looking at the blockbusters. That sucks.

yogidevbear10:08:14

They seem fairly comparative now in terms of memberships, etc. I read something about netflix streaming being free on PS as opposed to Xbox but then saw an article from 3 years ago saying Xbox had removed the membership restriction for streaming

yogidevbear10:08:04

And to think, this all started because I wanted to get my son a Nintendo Switch and they were basically sold out everywhere (unless you want to pay a silly price) so my next step was PS/Xbox

yogidevbear10:08:04

I'd say I fall into the casual gamer camp so most likely going to play the odd evening with games that have cool single player campaigns

yogidevbear10:08:41

But only after giving a talk at a conference in October

jasonbell10:08:04

@dominicm As long as The Last of Us is in there then all is well with the world 🙂

maleghast11:08:19

I surrendered the console fantasy - my kids are too young (imho) and I get a lot more out of having a gaming PC than I do out of having a console.

maleghast11:08:30

Of course if money were no object and I actually had time… 😉

maleghast11:08:45

(to have both, I mean)

maleghast12:08:49

Anyone got a “naughty” way to look at a core.async channel to see if there is anything in there, without popping something off the channel?

mccraigmccraig12:08:45

that will take the value off, but won't block

mccraigmccraig12:08:01

why do you want to peek tho @maleghast ? i've got quite a lot of async code and i don't think any of it peeks ?

maleghast12:08:44

OK, lunch is happening brb… TLDR - I can see y code working attached to local / fake API, but when I connect it to remote / real API things grind to a halt…

maleghast12:08:54

Will have an experiment after lunch is out of the way

dominicm12:08:19

I think the only time I want to peek is when something confusing is happening whilst developing.

dominicm12:08:35

the naughty way I know is to create a buffer, that you pass in, then you can peek into the buffer.

maleghast12:08:55

@mccraigmccraig - Yes, yes, I am a PBCAK - I am aware of this… 😞

mccraigmccraig12:08:27

not you @maleghast - i was having my own PEBCAK moment 😉

maleghast12:08:56

Oh I see! LOL

maleghast12:08:14

Wow, that’s a truly terrifying emoji

maleghast12:08:23

OK, I am 99% certain that I am doing something stupid trying to re-use a function for two different bits of data…

Rachel Westmacott13:08:13

I did once create a buffer for core.async that rendered a graphical view of its fullness, It was quite fun watching the buffers fill up and empty - I’m not sure I still have the code though.

maleghast13:08:04

That sounds very very cool 🙂

Rachel Westmacott13:08:52

^ that’s very bare bones though

maleghast13:08:08

Oh…. It appears that I have not been cleaning up my DB connections…

maleghast13:08:48

So, my channels are working, it’s postgres running out of client connections… I wonder if I can find something on the internet about getting yesql to give up connections..?

Rachel Westmacott13:08:31

I wonder why the internet is showing me pregnancy test adverts - do the latest cutting-edge AI adbots know something I don’t?

dominicm13:08:53

have you heard the walmart story?

dominicm13:08:44

Sorry, Target

maleghast13:08:41

This looks quite scary…

dominicm13:08:06

quite an old story, fairly innocent.

maleghast13:08:00

*nods* It’s not “scary” but it is illuminating.

Rachel Westmacott13:08:16

I had heard it. But it seems unlikely in my case.

dominicm13:08:49

I wonder what would predict someone being uncertain about pregnancy? I guess purchasing certain types of drugs to that can be used to alleviate morning sickness? No idea what happens in the early stages of pregnancy precisely.

agile_geek16:08:13

Day 5...still haven't touched a line of Clojure...any one want to hire me and I'll see if I can exit without doing anything except fill out online requests for access and s/w?

mccraigmccraig16:08:38

uh, have you been hired to do clojure @agile_geek, or was it just a dream ?

agile_geek16:08:17

@mccraigmccraig it's not a dream....might be a nightmare?
