G'day Bruce
morning
@carr0t it's norwenglish
the å is pronounced like the "au" in "faun"
yes, as long as you don't roll your rs
Yeah, I pronounce 'faun' like 'forn' and 'mourn' like 'morn' (which is now making me think of DS9)
i don't think i've ever seen DS9
What makes DS9 better?
@mccraigmccraig Don't you mean "as long as you don't rrroll yourrr rrrs"?
What is a Pirate’s favourite letter?
@peterwestmacott I was never a big fan of TOS. The movies are good, but TNG was already out by the time I was old enough to watch. A lot of episodes of TNG haven't stood up to the test of time so well, whereas I think DS9 has aged much better. Also it's more... realistic? That sounds silly when talking about sci-fi, but it was more gritty/dirty and the characters seemed more well rounded and fleshed out. It also had more of an arc plot instead of just being one off episodes all the time
“realism” in sci-fi is a very serious subject
Voyager just didn't have as many interesting episodes, I never managed to get into Enterprise, and while I am really enjoying Discovery it doesn't have the nostalgia that TNG/DS9 did because I didn't grow up watching it
I'm really enjoying watching the new Star Trek Discovery on Netflix. All this talk makes me want to watch the previous series' as well. I might give DS9 another go 🙂
And maybe TNG
I came here to say morning and now I realise I already did, less than half an hour ago. “One of those days”.
These days if a series doesn't really find it's feet within half a season it gets canned
But TNG's first 1-2 seasons are a pretty rubbish really, and as they're mostly self-contained episodes you don't lose much by skipping them except maybe character introductions
Likewise DS9 starts off a bit meh because they're on a space station so can't even really go anywhere. Then they get the Defiant so can go travelling, and also the arc plot starts to ramp up
anyone got a 32GB linux-friendly laptop with a hi-res (retina equivalent) screen they would recommend ? 16GB on my mpb is killing me right now
no it’s pretty frustrating how hard it is to get 32gb on a laptop these days 😞 It’s hard to believe 16gb has been pretty much the max you’ve been able to have on most lines for what feels like forever!
haven’t looked in the past 6-9 months though, so maybe things are better now…
i was just about coping until i had to start building a windows version of our app... vmware being the tree trunk that broke the camels back
well this gets you 32GB, linux and hi-res - https://system76.com/laptops/galago - but only a 13" screen
@mccraigmccraig some of the linux Dell machines have larger screens and more ram IIRC (not the xps13 obv)
does screen size matter? I’d be plugging it into a monitor if I was going to do regular serious work using it.
@peterwestmacott yes - i never use a monitor, i prefer a hi-res screen and small, crisp, fonts
@mccraigmccraig do you have a separate keyboard, a magic back, or terrible posture?
(or amazing eyesight?)
@peterwestmacott no separate keyboard, and a magic back, apparently. and while my distance eyesight is about -4 i'm quite happy reading 7 point text
lucky you, mine’s terrible (although better since I got a standing desk)
darn @otfrom none of the high-spec dells are available from dell in a linux configuration afaics, and i really don't want to do it myself
What spec is missing from the XPS Linux combination? I'd consider my laptop high spec, but maybe it isn't 😛
XPS15 does the trick @dominicm - 32GB RAM is my principal reason for moving off of this MBP, and i want a 4K screen too
@mccraigmccraig if you talk to the dell guy on chat then they should be able to get you the right setup
those ones on http://dell.com/developer should all be available
this one seemed spot on - http://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptops-notebooks-and-2-in-1-laptops/xps-15-9560/spd/xps-15-9560-laptop/cnx95608
but it's not happening until at least next month
dell xps 15 9560 looks about right though - and the linux journey doesn't seem too hard - https://github.com/rcasero/doc/wiki/Ubuntu-linux-on-Dell-XPS-15-(9560)
With arch, there's no special setup for the XPS, believe it should be the same for anything running a recent (last year+) kernel.
what does arch give you @dominicm ?
i've been relying on my facial hair for street cred up until now @sundarj - would arch mean i could finally shave ?
dunno, never tried
@mccraigmccraig if you talk to the dell guy on chat then they should be able to get you the right setup
I am very seriously considering buying an XPS 13" in the next couple of weeks, but I really don’t need 32GB of RAM - at least for now… 😉
They're definitely not cheap
No indeed… I mean the 13" one I have my eye on is not “cheap” either, but the 15" with 32GB goes a little too rich for my blood, seeing as I am not going to stop running my MacBook Pro as well.
(having the Dell will allow me to stop using my Mac for “work” and seeing as the Mac is “mine” but the Dell will be the property of my Ltd. company…)
a 32GB/1TB/4k dell is a fair bit cheaper than my 16GB/1TB MBPR was @yogidevbear
I never said MBP were cheap either 😉
certainly true
As the years go by and the prices go up like this, I start to feel like an antiquated dinosaur
@yogidevbear - Really? I remember computers being much more expensive than they are now, factoring in inflation etc.
@guy - I do too, fwiw, but I am locked into Apple’s ecosystem - I have Terabytes of iTunes Video (while we were offshore it made a LOT of sense to have non-physical media), and I can’t use Lightroom on Linux
Well 7-8 years ago I remember buying decent spec laptops for around £600
@yogidevbear - You still can buy a decent spec laptop for that money, but if you want 16-32 GB of RAM there is a premium to pay…
sam @guy - touchbar seems like a silly response to other mfrs including touch-screens
Yeah just seems like a gimmick. I do however like the touch sensor thing, i’ve found that quite useful
@yogidevbear i'm currently running cassandra, elasticsearch, several clojure vms and vmware - all memory hungry little beasties, so i'm expecting to pay more to run all that stuff
@guy - Well I’ve not found anyone else who can open my laptop with their fingerprint so…
@mccraigmccraig - Yikes! That is a heavy workload!
I completely agree with that sentiment
The specs support a lot more processing/memory power than was probably required 8 years ago
@mccraigmccraig @guy FWIW, I use the touch bar quite a lot. I happen to have apps that make good use of it…
oh, ok @maleghast - what use do they make of it ?
I use Airmail and have many different email accounts, Airmail has a neat Touchbar integration for account switching.
Photoshop has some nice integrations with the TouchBar too, but I am just getting used to those
Even after all that, I do see why other people feel it’s gimmicky - I just happen to have fallen into a lucky place of it fitting my workflow in a few areas so I am not-negative about it, and in some aspects quite like it.
It’s definitely not for everyone, though, and I think that overall it was a bad play for Apple… Having said that I know a lot of non-technical people who love it, so who knows… I guess it depends where Apple’s main laptop customer base is.
Just a friendly reminder if anyone happens to be in the area, we're hosting our first FP meetup in Horsham (West Sussex) on the 7th of Feb https://www.meetup.com/Horsham-Functional-Programming/events/246609047/
I know most of you aren't in the area so don't know if anyone from this channel will be able to make it. If you can, would be great to see you there
i estimate a ~25% chance i will make it @yogidevbear - it's about 35 mins drive away according to google, which i may or may not be able to countenance on a schoolnight
@mccraigmccraig that would be awesome No worries if you can't, but would be great if you can
I have just put my half broken mqtt broker on github: https://github.com/thomas-shares/mqtt-kat
Does anyone remember what the approximate ticket price was for EuroClojure last year?
Ha! Now I know what @thomas looks like!
P.S. Thanks for sharing the repo
What were you hoping for that you haven’t found?
idk, I'm a bit hampered by my lack of knowledge with Clojure, but Korma looks neat, but doesn't appear to play nice with the scaffolding provided by Luminus. And hasn't been updated in years Honeysql looks similar I guess. but with a bit less pretty and a lot more manual work Toucan appears to be a wrapper around honeysql, but without as much expressiveness. And then HugSQL is as slow as molasses when you're just pottering around trying to work things out.
