Good morning đ
I once interviewed for a company and heard that they put an emphasis on "greppable code", which I really liked. Do you know any thought pieces on this subject?
I feel like The Pragmatic Programmer also talks about this, at least in spirit (it's been a long time since I read it).
subscribing to the thread! I don't remember seeing it phrased like this, but I can think of a few practices that fall into this category. Something that's underappreciated is basically adding your own identifiers as anchors in comments, especially when you have code in multiple places that should be considered together
;; this looks terrible but was done for good reasons, see NOODLEHACK26
... somewhere else ...
;; Keep in sync with noodle definitions based on flux capacitor spec, see NOODLEHACK26Tangentially related to what Arne wrote, a new habit I took up recently was to move comments inside the forms they annotate. Sort of like docstrings for forms that don't support docstrings. This way they have a better chance of moving together.
(;; we need to do this to align the index with the COBOL system
inc foo)@plexus in thinking about how a system that's implemented in many different deployables by different teams in different languages and different repositories could be documented coherently, I had thought of the same; Could we maybe come up with a formal specification for some signifier that you could add in a code comment in any (relevant) language, that could tie up different parts of an implementation of an overarching feature? Like; Clojure
;; Implements <our-project> feature NOODLEHACK26
Javascript
// Implements <our-project> feature NOODLEHACK26
Some automated process could then crawl across these different repositories and gather all references in one places, presumably along with prose describing the overarching NOODLEHACK26 feature.
It's so easily broken by mistyping or otherwise not adhering to the protocol, but it might better than nothing...@imre I do the exact same thing! Too bad nobody reads the comments, regardless of whether they're in or out of the form đ
My comments aren't for others. They are for myself in 2 years đ
ah, you're "nobody" then đ
And I want them to travel with the code as others move things around in those 2 years
"we are the noooobodies. we want to be soooomebodies" đś
Same. Clojure code is awesome in terms of just moving things around. Might as well work with that feature.
I often move stuff around without running it and I still have faith that it'll work because it's just so predictable and stable.

I finally arrived at the goal of a particular task at work which I've been working on all year. I looked up my PR's and tried to get an overview, and it turns out I did 111 PRs đŽ I think I did well by chopping it up into so many small bits that were relatively easily reviewable. pats self on shoulder
