What do you mean?

why does slack bother me with this? don't they have better things to do?

😄 1

They've been "improving" Slack UI for the past few years without any fundamental changes. I'd say it's like with phones or desktop UIs nowadays - we're at a (local?) maximum and all that's left to do, without paradigm shifts, is to dance around it.

haha, yeah... if that is creativity at slack then better use claude maybe haha

If only there was a way to explore the path to different local maxima without pushing to production!

Maybe they did, and the result was "yes, that goofy pop-up is exactly what we need". :)

One of the reasons I barely use Discord anymore, even though I used to chat there all the time. Pop-ups everywhere. All the time. Mostly about "buy our subscription". Possible to block in the browser version, but it takes too much time and then change them all the time.

I recently learned Discord also has threads like Slack, but I don't think I've ever seen them used.

I've seen them being used, it's quite nice. Depends on the server.

@kiraemclean has a nice tui for slack here: https://github.com/kirahowe/slk, if you want to explore a more console-based approach 🙂

yeah that's intrusive. esp since it's bold too until you click it. are they planning on keeping "halloween themes" indefinitely? that's pretty awkward

The fine print on the dialog says it will end on November 1.

was too fine of a print to read leaning back in my chair 😛

I've been thinking that my theme isn't spooky enough, and it's interrupting my work too, because being frightened has always heightened my focus and I have been far too relaxed at my computer. A couple spiders should really help me improve my concentration and workflow I think.

Thanks for sharing. Yeah I have to use slack for work but found the desktop app was taking up to 2GB of RAM at times 😵‍💫 I found that library and forked it to fix some bugs and add the features I needed to be able to use as my main day to day ui (like unread flags, highlights when you're tagged, and canvas viewing)

There's a few things I think could improve in slack. Ability to move a thread from one channel to another for example? Threads within threads would be nice. (With the ability to move the inner thread out to be a top level thread in the channel). The huddle thing could have improved UX as well. Etc.

But it's so much easier to vibe code a small Halloween party trick, so that's my guess for why that's here

O no, they brought back the touch bar and this time it's the entire screen 😱

lol no mention of Apple Pencil support

I think it's a way to appeal to GenZ/alpha. They grew up with chromebooks at school and are used to touchscreen laptops.

the finger smudges will be incalculable

As long as they offer a no touch option

They do offer it, but not with the OLED screen

@hmoorefarley Hey! I'm 64 and you'll tear my touchscreen laptop and my touchscreen desktop from my cold, dead hands! 😄

Part of the reason I switched from Mac to Windows was because I love touchscreens and Apple wouldn't make any!

> After I use my ipad, I keep poking my laptop screen Running gag later in the Three Body Problem series.

> I love touchscreens Yas, they're quite cromulent---I eagerly await my new Supernote---except... Except I hate typing on touchscreens, big or small. The demise of Nokia also took away good sense from mobile computer-ing.

(Narrator: The wonderful memory of the delightful Nokia E61i coaxes a lone tear from his brimming eyes.)

Fond memories of Nokia E71

🚨 nostalgia rabbit hole alert

I never quite understood the ergonomics of a laptop touch screen. What would be awesome is to have a pen to draw stuff like on an iPad, but you can't fold the keyboard away afaict?

@seancorfield I guess you're young at heart. Lol

I'll take that... :)
