I have both - got an Onyx BOOX Note quite a while ago as it ticked various boxes for me (flexibility, Android etc.) and it sounded more open than the remarkable, but it didn't really click for me as a note-taking device -- I episodically use it to read comics 🙂 More recently invested in Remarkable Paper Pro (refurbed) and Paper Pro Move and find I actually use them quite a bit. More for sketching ideas for endless home-refurbishment than software work though. But for me it's a better notepad. And the lack of distraction is a win. Yeah sounds cool... but I definitely don't need another E-ink tablet 🙂

I’ve only used the rM2, and don’t see much reason to move away from it. I don’t miss Android at all – the rM’s UI does pretty much everything I want it to do, and if you want your favourite terminal software, then it should be reasonably easy to cross-compile it with the official SDK. You can use it as a secondary display, with a hack: get a terminal running (I’ve tried https://github.com/timower/rM2-stuff/tree/master/apps/yaft), ssh from it to your main computer and run a terminal multiplexer from there. You can then attach your main box to the same multiplexer and have, say, Emacs show up on the rM. Caveat: last time I’ve tried it, it broke the rM’s screen sharing (which comes in handy sometimes), so I’ve dropped it. But it might work these days.

That said I’d consider Supernote (or rmpp) if I were to buy an e-ink tablet today 🙂

reading about general usability I'm more inclined to get remarkable over onyx, but having normal android on onyx seems promising. I need to dig into modding options a bit

I used it for a while. I did find somewhat frequently that the results weren't as good as using google directly. I guess the personalization helps? and/or I was noticing the bing results getting mixed in perhaps.

Maybe you've seen it before, but I'd definitely suggest trying Kagi.

I use DDG for most things, but I toss on a !sp for start page when it comes to dealing with syntax, like clang "-include-pch" !sp. This is because DDG doesn't give as good of results in these cases. It's another case where DDG's bangs really come in handy. !w, !cpp, !yt, etc. If you're not familiar, definitely give 'em a go.
