John Carmack on some regrets with how he ran business during Quake development: https://x.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/2069799283369345247 I love battle stories like these! Seems super honest too. He is sorry for some of the things and wouldn’t do them again, but also acknowledging how it’s impossible to do great things without regrets, so he’s not beating himself up.
> The follow up game could have then brought in full 6DOF environments and characters. > I think one of the key insights here is actually to iterate more. Don't try and fit everything in one game. Reps are good. Early day id (might have been before they were named that) was shipping a game every 3-6 months (if I remember correctly).
That was a beautiful thing to read.
What was also beautiful to read was John Romero’s repost. https://x.com/romero/status/2069832437924765817 He’s basically basically saying that “try and fit everything” was in the DNA of id. 😃
