An update from our Clojure buddy Zach Oakes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhhPUrizZcw
Wow, that's brutally honest and open... and a little sad to hear, but based on the comments it seems like his sentiments are widely shared π
He also made a follow up video where's he a little less depressed
Wow. Knowing a bit too well what it can mean to suffer depression, I hope he will continue recovering!
Just watched both of his follow-up videos. Thanks for the heads-up on that @borkdude
This video shows a lot what I can see in dev nowadays. People are distressed, nobody knows what is going to happen to our field.
Yeah, it is a time of massive changes. For a lot of folks in software these days, this is their first big disruption. I got started in insurance, writing assembler and COBOL, back when most everything was single processor stuff, and there were dozens and dozens of target chip architectures out there, so every program had to be built from source for each different machine. SQL databases didn't exist (commercially) when I got started. The web didn't exist either. You learned from manuals and colleagues -- and conferences, if you were fortunate. I'd been programming professionally for about 15 years by the time the "Gang of Four" Design Patterns book was published. The size of modern tech companies and the vast oceans of money being poured into everything have amplified the (appearance of) changes in the last decade or so, but we've had several waves of huge disruptions over the span of my career -- the explosion (and later implosion) of the web probably being the biggest and that happened 25-30 years ago, when some of today's hot shot programmers weren't even born and many were not of working age π It all just makes me very glad I'm at the end of my career and looking forward to retirement in a year or two!
Heads up, https://github.blog/news-insights/company-news/github-copilot-is-moving-to-usage-based-billing/ to GitHub Copilot.
Ref this long rant about unsustainable AI biz models. https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-subprime-ai-crisis-is-here/ Anyway, what really annoys me is that when yo have GitHub Copilot business license VS Code will not let you use local models, local models are available only for personal accounts. At least not yet. And I have a desktop with RTX5090 running LM Studio and a variety of models that I cannot connect to VS Code...
Yeah, Edβs been one of most vocal and sensible ones in the current state of AI and it's hype.
oh, can you recommend other folks to check out as well?
Honestly the only one I know by name is Ed, I know him due to his many interviews on the βThe Tech Reportβ YouTube channel. It's a bit hard core anti AI channel and goes a bit too far at times. But Ed is a good guest since he clearly researches details, specifically from an economic and environmental perspectives which I think has not been covered enough. He had also announced this pricing change during his latest interview as well. Seems like has quite a few insiders. Although I think reading his blogs will be better than the interviews, anything well thought out than heat of the moment is better.
apart from a fair bit of the info from ed (via "better offline" and his web site), i've learned about the existence of individuals (e.g. cal newport and matt stoller) who i feel are worth paying some attention to. it's also nice when someone i already have some respect for shows up as well (e.g. cory doctorow and nik suresh). i do find the anger to be a bit much at times, but given what's been going on and the level of detail being examined, i suppose it's not surprising. i think i first learned about ed via carl brown (internet of bugs).
Already seeing a melt down on LinkedIn π!
Copilot Business at $19/month has been an absolute bargain for a long time. I'm not surprised to see a move to usage-based billing.
And here I am, still waiting till GitHub in general stops shitting the bed at every single chance it gets. "Zero nines availability" hitting hard over here. I got lucky that page even loaded after a refresh. Ah, no - spoke too soon. Another refresh got me "Failed to load issues". Bloody hell...
Yeah, GitHub recently has been incredibly "crashy". Just crashes when I try to view the commit history of a project...
Must be the pesky humans who don't know how to prompt right π€·ββοΈ.
@p-himik but what about creating shareholder value?! π
Hold up, does shareholder value come from reducing uptime?! I gotta turn my PC off, stat! :D
Shareholder value comes from vibe-coding features, including web backends!
@dharrigan beat me to it but that uptime meme dashboard is one I keep on speed dial for occasions such as these.
We have regular issues with GHA at work.
which one of you told your botnet to start doing a bunch of github searches https://www.githubstatus.com/
https://mrshu.github.io/github-statuses/ is even funnier. "87.87% uptime".
> 93 incidents in the last 90 days
they gotta update their page lol
