i'm grateful to @alexmiller for fielding my questions and prodding. i ask a lot of questions (on this server and elsewhere) and he always takes time to explain his process (and the core team's process) and their reasoning. he takes a lot of flak by being the most vocal and prominent member of the core team, but he has remained steadfastly patient with me, even when we've strongly disagreed.
