Morning All...

maleghast07:11:53

Not strictly__ a Clojure Q, but you lot are skilled and many of you are AWS-friendly… Anyone out there successfully peered two VPCs, one with RDS etc and one with a Kubernetes Cluster in it..?

agile_geek07:11:34

@thomas loving the bruce emoji!

thomas08:11:32

morning. and thank you @agile_geek

jasonbell08:11:46

Day four of my holiday and my screen is full of bruce 🙂

mccraigmccraig08:11:50

@maleghast: no, but i imagine the firewall / routing config is something of a pita ?

mccraigmccraig08:11:30

@jasonbell: there is no escape from bruce

maleghast08:11:36

@mccraigmccraig Yeah, it is… I’ve got the two VPCs talking but getting internet access for my containers is proving hard work

maleghast08:11:09

@jasonbell Why would you want to get away from bruce

mccraigmccraig08:11:24

u mean outbound access @maleghast ?

maleghast08:11:57

to test I exec’d onto the one container I have successfully deployed and tried to ping out to http://www.google.com

mccraigmccraig08:11:26

that's not really impacted by the 2-vpc scenario is it?

maleghast08:11:32

probably not

maleghast08:11:09

the 2 VPC thing appears to be under control now - now I am wondering how I can deploy containers that have to hit endpoints in the public internet to my K8s cluster

maleghast08:11:19

No point deploying them until I know for sure that they can

mccraigmccraig08:11:38

@maleghast i deploy containers that hit the public internet to aws vpcs, so let me have a look in my vpc config

mccraigmccraig08:11:02

do you have an internet gateway set up and routed for your vpc @maleghast ?

jasonbell08:11:33

@mccraigmccraig Are you telling me that bruce is omnipresent?

mccraigmccraig08:11:03

and can you ping out from the container host ?

jasonbell08:11:10

@maleghast I didn’t say I wanted to get away from him, far from it. I am though on holiday 🙂

maleghast09:11:26

I don’t appear to be able to get on the container host - I only appear to be able to get onto the etcd-1 host (in fairness I built the cluster with someone else’s terraform https://github.com/kz8s/tack)

mccraigmccraig09:11:27

@maleghast i would first establish whether you are having an AWS routing/filtering problem or a container routing/bridging/filtering problem

maleghast09:11:28

If you are on holiday what are you doing on here, though? Should you not be drinking cocktails by a swimming pool, somewhere hot, or something*? (* I realise that this is a very narrow definition of “holiday”)

mccraigmccraig09:11:12

i.e. deploy a stock ubuntu image to the same vpc and see if you can ping out from there

maleghast09:11:22

@mccraigmccraig That seems reasonable. I’ve just discovered that I am no longer able to deploy containers… kubelet is failing to reach ECR when this morning it was 100% fine...

maleghast09:11:37

I hate__ this stage, the “getting it all working” stage...

mccraigmccraig09:11:31

it's not as bad as the "why on earth has it all gone tits up after months of being solid in production" stage 🙂

jasonbell09:11:42

@maleghast I was away sipping beers and stuff back in August, this is me just having a week off which has led to me sorting my clojure chops out and currently looking at a Black/Scholes model in Java which looks ripe for converting. Now that’s my holiday 🙂

jasonbell09:11:23

Well it’s one way to learn

maleghast09:11:36

My holiday is coming up next week - it is pool + beach + drinks - but it’s been a year since that, well 11 months

maleghast09:11:58

But first must make this **ing deployment work!

jasonbell09:11:15

@maleghast Have to admit we were in Benidorm this time last year and it was lovely and quiet. Was in Cyprus this year during the summer so not going anywhere at the minute. Well ClojureX, I’ll consider that as a busman’s holiday, really looking forward to it.

maleghast09:11:56

I wish I was in striking distance of a Clojure conference, or better yet a Clojure job! I am in Manila - not a lot of Clojure going on here...

jasonbell09:11:37

Home of the envelopes!

maleghast09:11:48

There is a Finnish company that has a dev team here (I know someone who works there) that do Clojure, but the entire team here use Java and are “not interested” in learning Clojure 😞

maleghast09:11:12

Yes, home of the envelopes

jasonbell09:11:58

That hurts, I’ve not looked at Java at all over the last few months. Archived off all my Java projects, deleted Eclipse. Fortunately I’m working full time Clojure so that makes things easier for me.

jasonbell09:11:10

This will be my first Clojure conference though.

maleghast09:11:43

Well congrats on working with Clojure full time, that’s awesome 🙂

maleghast09:11:37

ClojureX was great the last time I went, which is a long time ago now - knowing (some of) the people involved in making it happen you should have a great time.

jasonbell09:11:04

Cheers bud. Now to the dentist!

agile_geek10:11:53

@jasonbell given my experience with my first Clojure conference you will be organising the next one 😉

thomas10:11:14

@mccraigmccraig you are missing out.... and I also think you should do a talk sometime... as you have lots of interesting stuff to add IMHO.

practicalli-johnny11:11:56

@mccraigmccraig if you buy a ticket you will find the time 🙂

practicalli-johnny11:11:30

Not that I am in anyway biased 🙂

agile_geek11:11:34

@mccraigmccraig usually the way ppl find time is when they're volun-told to do a talk by @jr0cket, @otfrom or me!

mccraigmccraig11:11:55

ah, the old voluntelling trick

practicalli-johnny11:11:58

Those that dont comply get to do some Cobol programming with agile_geek

agile_geek11:11:22

on punch cards, no less!

practicalli-johnny11:11:30

punch cards... when I was a lad we used to dream of using punch cards....

agile_geek11:11:54

If it wasn't for my Alzheimer's meaning I don't remember after 10 mins I could get upset about these jibes about my age 😀

agile_geek12:11:54

@jr0cket done. Got to tick 'Recent professional Clojure developer' box! W00t!

practicalli-johnny12:11:33

I know thats why you left completing the form until the last minute 🙂

thomas12:11:33

Can I join you as well @agile_geek and tick that box somewhere? Would love to even if I haven't been to ClojureBridge...

thomas14:11:26

question for you lovely people.... I am thinking about writing my MP with regards to how I feel about the whole brexit drama.... that it played a role in me leaving the UK etc... do you think I should?

thomas14:11:55

(even though I never could vote for my MP in the first place)

kevin4214:11:12

I think you should

kevin4214:11:23

It would be very interesting too.

thomas14:11:18

would someone like to proof read it?

thomas14:11:18

yes it has bruce

thomas14:11:45

and the best thing is... you are our leader!!! so hugs for everyone!

agile_geek15:11:00

@thomas I can proof read if you want

thomas15:11:41

@agile_geek DM'ed you the text.

agile_geek15:11:32

@thomas cheers. Might be late tonight before I get around to reading it tho.

thomas15:11:05

ok no worries. thank you

practicalli-johnny15:11:07

@agile_geek something else for you to read, I've created a new presentation for the ClojureBridge London volunteer training for tonight https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1YjqllOqaGvyAPfKBaRbNfotXBaXpqa5_wSy62VhPM7I/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000#slide=id.p - Feedback most welcome

agile_geek15:11:35

@jr0cket that's going to have to wait for the weekend

practicalli-johnny15:11:04

well hopefully you will read it tonight at the volunteer training session...
