It's kind of funny, because they've spent the past 5 years centralizing the IT operations at the university in order to improve security which has been incredibly annoying and somewhat pointless to us developers (bunch of extra work). And what happens when there is major hacking scandal? The whole thing fails because everything is centralised. Maybe the decentralised solutions we had before weren't so bad after all...

they also told me to update a server I am responsible for, but I can't because my password expired and they won't allow me to change it...

I can't even email them back about it now from my work email...

they shut down everything on the server. I am not affected personally and I don't feel personally responsible for this mess, so I don't care enough to pursue this right now.

I don't know what that is exactly, but it sounds like overkill to me either way. basic booking site = crud = sqlite with some HTML to me

I know sqlite is the 🔥 but also, why not use a datomic (or it's ilk) as a DB? Or even, as I have done in the past ... a duratom that gets persisted to a file system, db or object store

in the end you can do what the F you want of course. Maybe the bigger question is if you are being retained to maintain it or if they would like to look after it themselves, at least for the content side?

Regardless of the tech choices, doing a thing you do for work for a friend at mates-rates is very often a way to fall out with that friend. They will often value your time much less than you do because they don't see all the work you put in. Especially in this age of vibe coding seemingly devaluing people's perception of the work we do. That said, I vote datastar + datomic. Run away from all PHP and especially wordpress as fast as your legs will go.
