Pass current time into functions rather than having them reach out to get the current time?
Or did you mean "clock running" as time pressure?
they have you download a jar that keeps with time from the server.
yes, they say 10 minutes is enough basically. I took a lot longer. had to setup a few things first.
but it turns out this system is new and hasn't been fully tested yet.
Yeah, it's easy to under value the tests. And to under estimate the time write good tests.
I think there's a misunderstanding in this thread. Thomas probably refers to a job interview code test and teodurlu thinks its about regression/unit testing
that makes a lot of sense. π What would we do without you, @borkdude!
you are, of course, right @borkdude. I'm sorry that wasn't clear
A 10-minute timed coding test sounds awful! How is that a useful measure of a developer's ability? That's not how we work in the real world.
I agree π€·
They just wanted to check that you chose the right model for the task π
Unless it's literally just testing the fact that you can write code and aren't just a script kiddie with a Claude subscription, 10 minutes is pretty fucked up.
the code they provided required java 25, so I had to install that first. some minutes gone already.
But then, maybe employers like this aren't worth working for.
I have an uninterrupted strike with 100% failures with this sort of time boxed tests, half hour or 2 hours never mind, I tank them all (unsure I'll bother next time I have to do another one). I'm surprised that there's people getting hired at all this way. 10 mins is truly ludicrous π€£
I would never perform well under these kinds of tests
It's been a long time since I have been asked to do a live coding testβI walked out of that interview. Weirdly, they still offered me the job. I said "no". And the only time, as a hiring manager, that I've ever given anyone a live coding test was nearly 40 years ago and I objected strenuously to my management chain about it.
I proved my point by suggesting that everyone on the team should also take the test: almost everyone failed it.
Good morning!
