@borkdude Maybe, but I wouldn't plan on it personally. There are still some sticking points in the negotiations.

It may end "soon" but it will likely take a few weeks for things to get back to normal -- a lot of people are still dealing with not getting paychecks until the back pay stuff is sorted out which could take months.

When they are cancelling flights, how long before do they announce it? It's not like this is due to a storm or so, it seems like they can plan ahead?

I live in Philadelphia, is there clear evidence that a PHL -> CLT flight has been cancelled? I have not received any emails, this is a major route with flights all day long, CLT is a major east coast travel hub

We are in uncharted territory with this long of a govt shutdown, I can say historically PHL is a good airport with short lines in my experience, I don't recall ever having an issue. Can't comment on passport control latency w/ an EU passport

What does the govt shutdown mean? it means federal employees such as the security checkpoint are calling out "sick" due to missing a paycheck, so they are reducing the number of active checkpoints, so security queues may be longer

At the moment, we are at seasonal lows for air travel and there is some capacity in the system. They are cancelling some flights and rebooking people to reduce overall flight count and the load on air traffic control. At the moment, they expect that to be at the same level of occurrence/disruption as a serious storm. Of course, if it’s happening to you then it feels pretty personal. For folks coming in through some East Coast airports, worst case if you miss a connection to Charlotte, you could potentially drive (with a rental car). It's about 8 1/2 hours from PHL to Charlotte. IAD (Washington Dulles) to Charlotte is just over 6 hours. I'm driving from N.E. Ohio -- about 8 hours.

Do not plan to take a train. There is an Amtrak station in Charlotte, but trains in the southern United States are slow, infrequent, and unreliable. Train to Charlotte is 8–10 hours from Washington, D.C., 6 hours from Atlanta, with only 1–2 departures per day.

The likelihood that there is a new plane going to charlotte within 10 hours is probably worth the wait

From what I heard the International travel should not be affected. For domestic flights, yes - we'd definitely see some crap. I had to fly just yesterday from Philly to Dallas. I've been advised to get there five [!] hours before the flight. I got there early - TSA lines were normal. The terminal itself was weirdly not crowded. The onboarding started exactly as scheduled. Only after taxiing to the runway, the captain announced that due to the current circumstances and gov shutdown we'd have to wait. "40 minutes is actually not that bad", said the captain. We landed on time, and I was glad I didn't get stuck there.

Well, it depends - if you think in terms of "28 days later", sure - that looks absolutely horrifying. If you're more like a "Zombieland" fan - maybe it's fun and quite adventurous.

I had a good experience taking a train to South Carolina from Philadelphia last month. So I am actually planning to take the train to Charlotte this Tuesday. It is 12 hours, mind you, but I think it's great focus time, with lots of good scenery.

But I am doing this primarily because I enjoyed the train. I'm flying back Friday night.

I flew into Raleigh without any issues and then took an amtrak, probably too late for that for folks who would have been able to

@nick383 yeah the train is great, highly recommend

@stuartsierra the train is comparable to driving and you get your time back to focus/work, as someone who has taken Amtrak multiple times it's nice

Booking in advance is smart though, the train I'm on rn is sold out
