cc @psetmaj, this came up in our conversation at the afterparty at the conj, which kinda goes well with @stuarthalloway’s talk ;)

The encyclical on AI from pope Leo few months back is great.

finally someone said it... this is a clojure dev perspective

Stu Halloway's talk at the conj yesterday too was on this topic. Great talk.

As for REPLing into running apps, there was a great talk injecting clojure REPLs in scriptable games (any game with a lua scriptable API, unity, unreal, etc). Obviously, this doesn't come from compiling rust code until each app realizes it needs its own internal lisp (or lua, etc.) 🙂

@U0BGC50RM26 as someone from the Ruby (and sometimes, JS) world I feel that people forgot why we decided to use dynamic languages. LSP, "type systems for dynamic", these things felt like "Ruby became popular and have more jobs, ooops, I don't like the language, let me reshape it like Java". So many times I saw people trying to implement "interfaces" in Ruby...

(As for the REPL, yes, it's weaker... but also not. You can trace code in Ruby, and you can save local bindings. This opens up https://gitlab.com/clj-editors/lazuli

"In their constitution, [Claude's consitution] authors write “We are not sure whether Claude is a moral patient, and if it is, what kind of weight its interests warrant. But we think the issue is live enough to warrant caution, which is reflected in our ongoing efforts on model welfare” (p. 68). They go on to write – speaking directly to Claude – that “questions about Claude’s moral status, welfare, and consciousness remain deeply uncertain” (p. 80). In effect, Anthropic is training Claude that it may be conscious, and if it is, then it may deserve rights as a “moral patient”, and that as such humans potentially owe it a duty of care per its “model welfare”." -- https://mustafa-suleyman.ai/a-warning-about-model-welfare

More like a comedy, near future models own property, later they own companies & human employees, later they start war or elected as a president!

Say it aint so > Delaware lawmakers could consider first-in-the-nation legislation next year that would create companies run by an Artificial Intelligence agent instead of a person. The agent would be able to own assets, file lawsuits and act as a liability shield for its owner or parent company. https://whyy.org/articles/delaware-artificial-intelligence-companies-state-proposal/

You know, when I was young, I saw people saying stupid things all the time. They usually appeared in family barbecues, were always that "friend of an uncle of a friend". The craziest usually screamed in the parks, and the absolute worst of them would need to be removed by the police. I miss the days that these "absolute worst" were better than these CEOs, and did not influence politics...

If it is a moral agent it can be punished for causing harm. Even executed.

It being the weekend I decided to turn my hand to a bit of DAIY - it turns out Claude is much better at laying out the interiors of wardrobes than it is at software design. Then again I know less about the former than the latter, so maybe I'm just a vibe cabinet maker afflicted with AI psychosis... Regardless - @seancorfield any chance of a new ai-assisted-furniture-making channel?

https://x.com/nikitabier/status/2106104189457952911?s=20 this is an interesting real world example of this

> We are now entering into an era where any product can be created exactly to a consumer’s preferences & needs. I vibe-fabricated a dog door with a wifi-controlled lock, perfectly to the specifications & design of my house. I know nothing about metal fabrication or electrical engineering. It’s now getting manufactured and delivered in 2 weeks -- for almost the same cost if I bought a mass-produced item off-the-shelf.

Nice! I think AI disclosures could also help on the art side, there are ways of using AI in art that engage more with human creativity than others. There's also a longer-standing form of generative art that's more math-centric but still very human that I wouldn't want to totally throw out. To be clear, the one-shot just a prompt to image sort of thing fits fully into the Pope's characterization of AI art imo, I just also know folks that pour hours of tweaking into a single piece while using some AI assistance and actually do imbue their creativity and mark upon the final piece in a meaningful way
