Fork me on GitHub

So, my intention has always been a win-win with Navis (where Untangled was developed) to have me take over the maintenance of Untangled. I’ve asked for permission to use the old resource accounts to keep from confusing the community and have gotten silence. I had temporarily placed the new repos in my account under the name untangled in hopes that they could be moved back to the original github namespace when approval was obtained. Their silence saddens me. To make a more clean break, I am going to be changing the name of my personal fork, creating a new logo, and rebranding. I think a case can be made that the name and logo are in the open source as well, but I want to avoid any problems or hard feelings with the company that originally open-sourced Untangled. Any suggestions are welcome.

Our preference at the moment is “Lotus”. Plays off of Om nicely.

parameme03:07:20

Just for information - "Lotus" was the name of a medium popular non-rails framework for ruby. (Since renamed to "Hanami"). You may find some search clashes.

tony.kay03:07:46

yeah, name clashes are a real headache in today’s world

parameme03:07:17

(And it may have IBM involved) 😞

tony.kay03:07:30

yeah, I knew abt that one

parameme03:07:24

Could you go with "padme"?

tony.kay03:07:54

I can go with anything…looking for something that has a nice ring/meaning. Why padme?

parameme03:07:38

"Om Mani Padme Hum".... I am not sure - but I was under the impression that padme was the lotus - "The Jewel in the Lotus"...

tony.kay03:07:58

ah, I’m not as versed, obviously 🙂

tony.kay03:07:22

I kinda like it. Easy to say. Not too hard to spell.

tony.kay03:07:53

no other clj/cljs projects use it

tony.kay03:07:18

the only registered trademarks on it are from lucas entertainment, and that is a diff industry

tony.kay04:07:41

I kind of like “Salient”

tony.kay04:07:07

in that we try to eliminate the non-important noise of development to only what is relevant.

tony.kay04:07:44

fulcra (the plural of fulcrum “a thing that plays a central or essential role in an activity, event, or situation.“)

parameme05:07:51

trefoil? (The simplest knot)

tony.kay05:07:52

I talked it over with my main collaborator @adambros . After much name searching, DNS, trademark looking etc. We decided that “fulcro”, the italian plural of fulcrum (he has Italian heritage), is a choice we really like. The english plural is also nice (fulcra) in that it gives it a slightly more classical/intellectual feel by accentuating the latin origin of the word. The group name for the libraries would be “fulcrologic” (already created, just in case), and that would probably lead us to create a company of that name providing support/consulting/training. It also has nice imagery that can lead to easier marketing/logos, etc.

tony.kay05:07:30

We’ll read various responses in the morning (US Pacific time). If there isn’t a compelling alternative, then that will be the name of our fork. Perhaps we can even figure out a way to license the music to “Technologic” by Daft Punk and write our own lyrics 😜

tony.kay05:07:45

“write it, push it, then mutate it …”

parameme05:07:35

Commission Pentatonix to sing it - they made a splash with a version of that.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MteSlpxCpo 😉

parameme05:07:27

I have to say - still mostly a clojure[script] lurker / hobbyist but untangled / fulcrologic datomic kafka onyx seems like an absolute dream stack that I have been looking for a while now. (On rails / postgres professionally at the moment). Thank you (and all the other giants) for your efforts in making things easier.

claudiu08:07:00

fulcro sounds nice. If it's still open. Really like Y42, like Y->lambda and 42 ref to hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy -> 42: The answer to life, the universe and everything 🙂

claudiu08:07:56

untangled sees like one of the best answers to web development and it's unnecessary complexity.

mitchelkuijpers08:07:17

Nice I can get our designer to create a nice logo

mitchelkuijpers08:07:52

I really want to make the website and logo cool, that can be a good way to get more people to use it

parameme10:07:50

fulcro logo - - a fan or lotus of levers / seesaw paths - building smooth curves out of straight line segments.

parameme10:07:44

(cf. string art curves)

adambrosio15:07:17

I like the idea of a lambda as a fulcrum and a lever all in one, alternatively just a ∆ delta

tony.kay16:07:28

Done, will start the rename

tony.kay16:07:28

I was thinking multiple (like 3) fulcra perhaps balancing 1's and 0's?

tony.kay16:07:23

or perhaps something on this theme, but with fulcra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierpinski_triangle

tony.kay16:07:49

maybe not so deep, but things balanced on things?

tony.kay17:07:45

just tossing out ideas

tony.kay17:07:36

The new slack channel is up at #fulcro

tony.kay17:07:56

I sent an invite to those of you that commonly chat here…please invite others I’ve missed

tony.kay17:07:06

I’ll be hanging out there from now on, and not here
