Is anyone here doing the Miracle Morning? I wonder what it will do, getting up so early and less sleep

robert-stuttaford14:08:16

seems like fun. i started today 🙂

borkdude14:08:03

@robert-stuttaford: are you also reading the book?

robert-stuttaford14:08:05

i love that it's just an hour, and that it packs reading, writing, meditation and exercise in. i've never done affirmations or visualisations before, so no idea how that'll work out, but the rest i've done plenty of, and they're great

robert-stuttaford14:08:11

i finished reading the book yesterday

borkdude14:08:25

@robert-stuttaford: you are fast! did you find an accountability partner?

robert-stuttaford14:08:48

just over 100 pages

borkdude14:08:17

@robert-stuttaford: we could become each others if you want

robert-stuttaford14:08:50

i skipped those pieces. i'll read and see what it involves 🙂

borkdude14:08:16

lol ok. well, I'm a little bit scared... don't want to become more tired than I already am right now... still working on the caffeine

borkdude14:08:53

one of my problems is that I never fall asleep before midnight, so I'd get up at 5 AM that would be a short night for me

robert-stuttaford14:08:01

making a spreadsheet with columns for dates and rows for habits is also a very simple way to track things

robert-stuttaford14:08:17

why don't you fall asleep? you don't want to? or you want to, but can not?

borkdude14:08:30

@robert-stuttaford: yeah, well actually I'm very good at building habits. 5 years on a healthy diet, exercising without skipping etc

borkdude14:08:44

want to but can not

borkdude14:08:47

just too awake

borkdude14:08:55

even when I'm tired

robert-stuttaford14:08:14

have you tried all the tricks? no light, no devices, eating appropriately, slightly cool room, etc etc

borkdude14:08:15

yes, I've tried it all. maybe light sleep deprivation would work, but then I would have to be very disciplined to get out

borkdude14:08:19

@robert-stuttaford: great, I'm going to read the article.

robert-stuttaford14:08:21

i don't struggle to fall asleep at all, but my wife does. hence my knowledge

robert-stuttaford14:08:30

i don't need a reason, i just need a place 🙂

robert-stuttaford14:08:54

exhausting your body and your brain with exercise helps too

robert-stuttaford14:08:19

the one thing about the podcast is being careful of using e.g. melatonin, because if you take it regularly, your body stops producing it naturally

borkdude14:08:12

I was still reading the article

borkdude14:08:44

I've taken melatonin for years, but I've gradually weaned off. Stopped it a few weeks ago

robert-stuttaford14:08:40

the thing Hal says in the book is not to wake up so early that you're not functional. the main thing is to have this plan and intention for your first waking hour

borkdude14:08:54

I have a morning routine for a year now

robert-stuttaford14:08:02

most people already fill that hour with unavoidables, and so he says wake up earlier

borkdude14:08:05

I've recently added exercise

robert-stuttaford14:08:15

you're freelance now, right, so it's really all up to you

borkdude14:08:07

true. I think I'll experiment with getting up earlier, just slightly and see what effect it has on sleeping in

borkdude14:08:03

My wife needs 9 hours of sleep and she has no problems getting to sleep

robert-stuttaford14:08:06

if you exercise and meditate in the morning already, then you're basically already set

robert-stuttaford14:08:12

because those likely use an hour already

borkdude14:08:13

just earlier

robert-stuttaford14:08:19

just a bit of reorg

borkdude14:08:37

But great to hear you're going to try it @robert-stuttaford !

robert-stuttaford14:08:07

kinda been ready for something like this for a while 🙂

borkdude14:08:27

I've submitted the youtube talk to HN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0uRp7BoPVY Would love to have a subcommunity of programmers that do this

robert-stuttaford14:08:19

yeah. i reckon anyone can benefit

robert-stuttaford14:08:47

as devs, we're usually detail focused and quite absorbed by what we do, so introducing some intentional focus on other areas is good

robert-stuttaford14:08:23

how far through the book are you? i'd be happy to partner up

robert-stuttaford14:08:38

worst thing that can happen is that we learn something 😄

borkdude14:08:16

35% now, I think I'll finish it within a few days at least

borkdude14:08:37

ok, I'll set the alarm clock at 7:00 tomorrow

robert-stuttaford14:08:13

hey we're in the same timezone

borkdude15:08:00

finished listening to the podcast, good information. probably not a good idea to sleep deprive myself below 7 hours 😉
