Good point! From talking with a couple people who started outside programmer culture (graphic design, anthropology, music, etc), they're maybe used to spending much more time trying to work things out, and moving themselves to necessary skill. Rather than diving in and assuming the first approach that pops into mind will be best.

In programmer culture, I often see the talent-based argument, "there's a correlation between music and programming talent." Whereas a growth-based argument might be, "Let's try diving into other work cultures, to adopt their mindsets."

@borkdude: What do you have in mind regarding spirituality and ethics, regarding software?

the mindset thing is huge. there's a bunch of great video interviews by Tom Bilyeu at http://insidequest.com. he has a reading list http://www.insidequest.com/toms-reading-list/, and Carol Dweck's Mindset is right at the top
