I wonder if there could be a white-hat AI slack bot to help tackle those accounts in advance and mark them as suspicious (e.g. change their display name with a flag)!

If they're only DM'ing people, Admins wouldn't know unless someone reported it -- same as today -- and their DMs give them away pretty quickly for folks on the receiving end. FWIW, when new folks join, Slackbot sends a note to one of the Admins (usually me, since I'm usually the one who maintains the http://clojurians.net signup link) and if they look suspicious we often mark them as a spammer and deactivate them proactively (based on patterns we've seen). Some spammers are dumb enough to just keep signing up with throwaway email addresses and they seem to get bored after we've deactivated several attempts 🙂
