I got a spam/scam job DM from @johngrafton015
Thanks, deactivated.
Why are you claiming my job posting is a scam? Stop with the baseless nonsense. Rather, I suspect that you guys might be scammers.
Huh, who reactivated your account? Anyway, @johngrafton015 have you read the CoC of this community? Unsolicited DMs result in immediate bans.
Ah, wait - I forgot to deactivate and just renamed it. facepalm My bad, deactivated now.
That was an unusual response. Make sure he's renamed so anyone with DMs from him can clearly see he's a spammer
You may have to reactivate him to rename him?
Nah, I deactivated and then renamed again - all in one go. If you saw his old name, that's because of Slack.
(I'm on my phone, at the hospital, so probably a quirk of the app and the Wi-Fi here:grin:)
I wonder if it might be worth it to have a dedicated #spam-report (or similar) channel, rather than having #community-development bear the dual responsibility of also being the police (moderator) dispatch hotline?
I agree. This channel is supposed to be fun!
This channel is listed in multiple places as the place to report spam, and I'm not keen on auto-adding people to yet another channel if we add #spam-report -- and this channel has mostly been used for spam reporting over the years. We often delete spam reports from here after dealing with them. But we've also had discussions about whether to leave reports (and responses) here to show that they are swiftly dealt with?
mmm, I certainly wouldn't discourage/ban spam reports being sent here (for the above reasons, backwards compatibility etc 😄), but do you think having that more-specific channel offered as an option would be harmful/confusing if it wasn't a global auto-add? If I was new and joined this slack (and didn't read any rules), and got a spam DM, the order of things I would probably try is typing in channel searches for (more or less in order): 1. "mod"/"admin" 2. "report" 3. "spam" Failing those, I would probably end up in here, but also might be liable to naively post in #clojure, or just give up and ignore it/not make a post at all
A dedicated spam channel might also discourage spam, and serve as a home for examples of what not to do for future members.
All new members get a welcome dm these days with a version of this message https://github.com/clojurians/community-development/blob/master/welcome-message.md
Certainly good its included in there! Though, I think the frequency of new users not following that threads convention (until they're poked to do it in-channel) is an unfortunate indicator that this message might not often be fully read- (I actually think this is similar to banner-blindness on websites: after joining 100+ forums/discords/discourses over the years I tend to assume these welcome pings are generic system-message fluff saying "please don't cause trouble")
but maybe combating that by trying to do a version of SEO on channels/channel-names is not appropriate, to your point
The Admin Team will discuss possible approaches tomorrow. There are more moving parts (and trade offs) than "just adding a new channel".
