How are Clojure freelancers doing? Any statistics? Personally, I'd like to see a #freelance channel, beside #jobs and #remote-jobs. Is there anything we can do (or are doing) as a community to grow the market?
> you somehow gotta grow the demand to grow the market. I've been thinking about https://whimsical.com/blog/how-we-built-whimsical, and how Clojure(Script) could be a good choice for startups. My perspective is as an independent dev, looking for work with climate tech startups, specifically. The author doesn't compare OOP to FP directly but I believe that the composability in FP could also be an advantage compared to class inheritance in terms of flexibility. The fact that one can use the same language for scripting, back and front-end dev is nice; less context switching and repetition. If this resonates with other folks, I'm thinking that there could be some concerted effort to pitch clj(s) to startups. Has this been done? Could it be worth the effort?
I noticed some channels: #startups #startup-in-a-month
Interesting! I hadn't even thought of looking for those but will have a look.
They're dead, though
Still, a good idea for me to check what's been discussed before to avoid reinventing the wheel.
I don't think I've seen any relevant statistics. And IIRC none of the regular questionnaires that I've seen, Clojure-related or not, have anything freelance-specific. "What's the size of your company?" - "[v] < 10". > Is there anything we can do (or are doing) as a community to grow the market? Just as anywhere, you somehow gotta grow the demand to grow the market. I don't think there's any initiative targeted specifically at that, just all the regular thing that affect it along the way by basically marketing Clojure itself or something that's written in it.
I suspect one challenge you might encounter in collecting those stats would be defining “Clojure freelancer”. My impression is that most freelancers work in whatever language the job demands, even if they have their own preferences.
True. I guess a clojure freelancer hub would center on a community orientation, rather than a choice of host/runtime.
