Yeah, it's been decided that it's best not to allow anyone to add them. If you have a specific emoji that you'd like to see on this server, you can ask admins to add it.

Note that emojis are tiny images. If the original image has lots of details, they won't be visible on the emoji. Here's that picture in 32x32 px. I can no longer see what it is, at all.

Also, there's a built-in 💥 which might be sufficient.

Alright, but let's discuss concrete things and not hypotheticals. Otherwise it'll be impossible to decide on anything. Can you find an image that conveys what you want, doesn't have a suitable emoji that already exists, and looks good in 32x32 px size?

The icon-as-a-message somewhat works, the inline icon doesn't IMO.

TBF, there are quite a few existing icons that suffer from the same issue. I had to hover over them more than once to start remembering their meaning.

It's fine. It didn't need to be this one ;D It was just an idea but the exact picture could've been different. What kind of emojis triggered the decision to not allow to add custom ones? Did they start to add ads?

Ones that some users complained about. Animated and flashy, I think.

Oh. I thought that they were nice. Especially the parrot one. I think this could be fixable by asking Slack to not animate the emojis as a preference in settings 🤔 (if they have this feature)

Were it up to me, I would've removed 50-90% of the existing custom emojirs, to be honest. Just check it out. Non-transparent background, half of them are not discernible at all, some duplicates, some without clear reason for existing (Windows notepad? Why?).

I think that the old emojis could be somehow cleaned up by a vote or by using statistics whether the emoji was used enough 🤔

Possible but I don't think it's worth it. Removing something has its cost, notifying every single active user on this Slack (not just the ones subscribed to #spam-reports since otherwise the vote would be heavily skewed) has its cost as well. Disallowing addition of new random stuff is probably the best compromise.
