Is there any discussion on moving away from Slack? Just loading it makes my late 2013 macbook browser freeze for a couple minutes, switching channels and searching take ages.

I've heard good things about Discord, which is where Reactiflux went after it became too big for slack.

there is a standalone app, have you tried it?

bbss15:05:31

I have tried it but that is just the webapp in an electron shell, the drawback is that I can't use my browser plug-ins (like vimium). I am not sure about it's performance being better. I guess I will give it another shot.

at least your browser does not freeze, it’s a separate process

bbss15:05:55

Yes true, but I've heard more complaints before. Just wondering if there is any talk about switching.

Don't know if slack is still capping at 7.500 members, seems to be a manual process, but I doubt they are making an effort to optimize for these numbers.

There has been lots of talk mostly in #community-development but it has all aged out now. The problem with various open source solutions is finding someone / some company willing to host such a large community for free. And so far neither any of those nor any hosted service has been good enough in terms of features for people to want to move.

We set up some Gitter channels many many months ago but folks just don't like Gitter as much as Slack.
