Folks, a question (maybe it's better fitted for #C0KL616MN - let me know if it is): is it normal for US-companies for the teams to communicate mostly via DMs, and not by public channels? This is something that's quite different from my past experiences, where I mostly used public channels with threads...

I think it's easy for things to end up in DMs for various reasons (eg. having a question for just 1 person, don't want to alarm people about something that isn't a big issue, etc), but I think public channels is a healthier set up. Most places I've work encouraged keeping everything public. The places where things were too private actively worked to get us to post more publically.

i push back on this a lot. We’re international and i don’t see any higher prevalence in DMs in US vs non-US based folks

but i say “ask me again publicly” a ton

it's weird and most us startups are pushing hard towards public channels

It may also depend on what platform you are on, a lot of people hate busy public channels and push hard to threads in slack, I could see that kind of thing turning into a culture of DMs if threads are not available

Depending on the company, if the public channels has the manager, then people will start asking each other more in DMs

In my experience it is pretty common. I agree that it's weird and not ideal. But pretty common nonetheless.
