I've discovered an odd pastime where you read famous passages as if they were complaining about web browsers: > Have you ever stood and stared at it, marveled at it’s beauty, it’s genius? All old-established application platforms have been destroyed or are daily being destroyed. They are dislodged by new npm packages, whose introduction becomes a life and death question for all civilised developers.
Does anyone have experience setting up and using tracing on AWS via OTEL for a clojure app? Ideally I'd like to move entirely to tracing and stop using logs altogether. Things I'm interested in learning about: • How to create and publish traces from the application (we're currently using mulog, is that sufficient?) • Correlating traces across async processes, particularly SQS and EventBridge (do I use one big trace or span links? Does xray fit into this somewhere?) • How to use Cloudwatch effectively to find relevant traces like we currently do for logs (what's the difference between Traces and Transaction Search? Are there search capability or pricing concerns I should know about?)
We use the same technology but we send the data to DataDog. I have not yet unlocked the mystery behind setting it up but it's on my list to investigate. Although we're still heavily reliant on logs.
I used #clj-otel in a Clojure backend on AWS 2020-2022 and was very satisfied with tracing only (logs weren't yet mature on OTel at the time anyway). If the processes consuming or reacting to SQS/EventBridge messages were Clojure processes configured with clj-otel, I think the traces would follow just fine. Cloudwatch was (and is) lagging A LOT behind honeycomb in queryability features and more, so I wasn't using Cloudwatch.
In 2025 at another company I used Cloudwatch on top of X-Ray for tracing and it was still lagging behind Honeycomb..
