Iβm considering submitting a talk proposal to the Conj, but Iβm genuinely worried about the prospect of travelling to the US given the geopolitical turmoil... Maybe wait for EuroClojure instead?
I share your concerns and would only go there for something truly necessary. Luckily I have nothing in that category.
yeah, I know the feeling (but then again, no plans of going there). And Euroclojure will be fun as well!
if you make current state of democracy a factor of your travels it's getting harder and harder. esp. czech republic is not so different from us politics if you look closely. you might not heard of it so much because it is a small country but the prime minister is a billionaire in coalition with a motorist party (haha) and a right-wing populist party. of course Babis is accused of fraud.
I think the distinction with the USA today - and pardon my ignorance for other countries - is the hostility with which foreigners are being treated and the potential for internment.
would I visit a clojure conf in former DDR? probably
I'd go to Russia before USA and certainly not worry about going to China
the https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/over-120-civil-society-groups-issue-travel-advisory-for-u-s-ahead-of-fifa-world-cup of teams, officials and fans of the world cup is clarifying
yesyes
I see that
As a former Brit, living in the US (originally in the deep blue SF Bay Area, California but now in deep red semi-rural Ohio), I sympathize with anyone having concerns over visiting the US. Unfortunately, a lot depends on your country of origin and your ethnicity right now π Tourists from Europe have been detained here for no good reason -- and given you have EuroClojure coming up, I'd suggest sticking to that until we can dig out of this awful pit over here... Things may improve after the mid-term elections but that will be after Conj.
heart of clojure is coming up, right? i think plexus just posted about it in #CBJ5CGE0G (https://clojurians.slack.com/archives/CBJ5CGE0G/p1780489959713229)
EuroClojure 2027 will be in Prague in the Spring.
yes. WE have Heart of Clojure AND EuroClojure ... :P
FWIW, I was anxious about going to the Conj in 25, but was very pleasantly surprised.
not to diminish the sadness of missing Conj, just want to note that you have other avenues for giving talks at high quality events full of cool people where you don't have to fear detainment/visa issues
@slipset do you mean 25?
Of course!
Will the US situation be way worse in 26 than 25 or same?
Treatment of tourists has definitely gotten worse since the last Conj...
it's already worse than it was a year ago, and i don't see it improving in the next 6 months
eh ok... π¨

If I could be mistaken for any sort of person of color, I absolutely would not visit the US until things improve (i.e., we have a change of government).
I donβt think you could, @seancorfield π
there are a ton of tourists visiting the US still, so it's not like we're suddenly strictly isolationist, but the enforcement and rejection process is way more inconsistent and prone to the whims of poorly trained folks than in years past
for example, my brother in law is a mexican man and he and my sister (redheaded white woman) travelled to mexico with two kids for a full month, crossed the border twice with no issues and no hang ups at all. comparatively, a naturalized citizen restaurant owner in my city tried to visit family in south america and was deported when leaving the country. so you know, it's less that it's 100% of cases and more that it's stochastic and impossible to predict
Truly sad to hear this, but it tracks with what we've been seeing in the news for the last 18 months.
