What are the official guidelines regarding the use of the name 'Clojure' in projects, commercial products, and company names?

I don't think there are any "official" guidelines

I'm happy to convey a question to Rich if that's useful

but, I mean, rich own's the name both commercially and technically, so doesn't seem very neighborly to use it

I seem to recall in the past some issues arising over other's using the clojure logo, and rich has definitely (a long time ago) responding to mailing list posts claiming ownership over all clojure namespaces with names that start with "clojure."

I can't find the namespace claim, but as I recall there was some compilation feature that rich turned on for all namespaces with names starting with clojure, and clojure-http-client (a clojure http client no one uses anymore) complained about the feature being turned on, and rich's response was something like: if it starts with "clojure" its mine

(https://groups.google.com/g/clojure/c/lo6QZiI8Ois/m/UD3PotL_mzQJ is a fun very old thread were people actually proposed a convention of starting names with clojure)

https://rubyonrails.org/trademarks This obviously captures a vibe that Rich may not actually want to capture, but if his vibe is generally "don't trick people into thinking this is official" while not trying to prevent the general use of the term in ecosystem, this may be useful prior art @alexmiller I was thinking about non-commercial uses, like say clojure-docs, and open source projects with the name Clojure in them, but also commercial uses like products to serve the ecosystem or consultancy business names. I'm keeping it general because I don't have a particular use case in mind at the moment, but I am wondering the general take

about 10 years ago, I wrote up a page like this for the logo and name and Rich told me not to post it and that people should just ask him. so ...

generally he has been fine with using Clojure in the name of a non-commercial group like "XYZ Clojure Meetup" or for projects serving the ecosystem like ClojureDocs. He has said mostly no to projects including the word Clojure as that conveys endorsement (other than ones he has endorsed like ClojureScript or ClojureCLR).

for the logo, similarly he has said it was ok to use it on a meetup group page or things about the language, but no to commercial uses, merch for sale, books, or any case where the logo is combined into something else. we have encouraged the use of reminiscent color or stylistic versions of those

past answers may not predict future results :)

I created the http://clojure-doc.org logo (back in 2023) https://clojure-doc.org/img/clojure-doc-logo-small.png and I asked at the time if it was considered okay (answer: yes). As for http://clojuredocs.org, that's now run by Nubank so...

So more restrictive than the Ruby on Rails case, but Rich would like to be able to perhaps make nuanced exceptions, so he doesn't want to codify it, does that sound about right? @alexmiller Perhaps TLDR don't use it commercially, and probably don't use it in your project name**
