I'm curious to know the state of Clojure and Clojurians in Scotland, as I'm considering a move to Scotland in 2024 (if I find a nice place) I'm aware of a few Clojurians in Glasgow and Dundee areas, wonder if there are more of us around? I'm also interested in opinions of nice places to live in Scotland, especially quite places in or near to lovely countryside. Any Clojurian cyclists in Scotland would also be good to connect with. I've got my health back to be about to do 60-80km bike rides once a week, so would love to explore more of Scotland by bicycle. Feel free to DM me here on Slack if you do not wish to share publicly. Thank you.

This makes me feel nostalgic. I lived there for about 3 months, and it was great. I would also love to do Clojure in Scotland 🙂

Can strongly recommend the Central Belt for living and thriving. I am not currently working in / with Clojure, but there is Clojure up here, OVO Energy, SkyScanner and others... I live here -> https://maps.app.goo.gl/2WEYk6t2ctN81Ar48 <- (well I will after Friday, I am in teh process of moving back in) and can strongly recommend the area, known as Strathard, around Aberfoyle and Kinlochard. Also big thumbs up for Callender, Buchlyvie, Kippen, Gargunnock and Stirling

I am not up to 60-80 Km at the moment, but I am trying to get fitter and there is great gravel biking in Strathard, Google "Gravelfoyle" if you want to know more.

There is, obviously, excellent hill walking and wild swimming all around Strathard and the wider Trossachs. Close enough to Glasgow, Stirling and indeed Edinburgh, but far enough away to feel as though you are miles from anywhere

maleghast16:10:34

Can you tell I like it here..? 😉

Bluntly, it's paradise (well almost, it does get colder and wetter than paradise), lovely people, great nature, wicked food and I am sure that you'd find a warm welcome, knowing you as I do. 😉

@U065JNAN8 might have some ideas.

I'm in Glasgow. I had no idea sky scanner used clojure, I had no idea there was any clojure scene in Glasgow at all!

@U08ABGP70 awesome info, I feel like the decision is pretty much made already after reading your words. Thanks, this will help me focus my house/cottage search a great deal.

Any time @U05254DQM 🙂. Wherever you end up in Scotland - I am just going to be optimistic here - I hope you have as much joy from the move as I have had, and if you end up local to me all the better! 🙂

I'm a Clojurian in Edinburgh! Haven't found any other locals though (although I am friends with a very experienced Haskeller). I moved here from Chicago 2½ years ago and it's been A++

TMac10:10:21

My bike didn't make the trip from Chicago, but I do share a coworking space with the editor of this newsletter: https://edibike.substack.com/

Would be great to have some sort of Scottish Clojure Meetup (I'd even go to Glasgow if I had to), but not sure if we have a critical mass yet

TMac10:10:23

And yeah, I also had no idea SkyScanner did Clojure. Good to know!

maleghast12:10:01

👋 Hey there @UJLF48QJC 🙂 I sometimes get over to Edinburgh, so if I have some notice on my being there I will poke you for a coffee / beer and a natter about Parens, if you like..?

maleghast12:10:21

I have an inkling that SkyScanner are not quite so Clojuric as they once were, btw, but I know that they started out as a Clojure Shop. FWIW there used to be a pretty popular Functional Meetup in Edinburgh, but I think that COVID did for it.

maleghast12:10:44

Re SkyScanner - their Stackshare doesn't mention Clojure at all any longer... 😞

TMac12:10:51

That would be great, definitely give me a shout when you're around! I'll DM you my mobile number which can be a little more reliable than Slack DMs :)

Roger that 🙂

I’m up in Montrose. The cycling is great in Scotland. I’ve heard from folks who’ve done it in England that the roads are much quieter and the drivers a bit more tolerant of cyclists. Would be great to meet up for a ride sometime. Could show you some good routes around Stirling. Gets a bit cold in the winter though. A good pair of overshoes to keep your toes warm is essential. Cool to hear of all the other clojurists up here. I work for statsbomb, which isn’t based in Scotland but there are a couple of other folks who work up here that you might know from your time there @U05254DQM.
