frequency in sending newsletters: once per fortnight seems optimal in the general case

Howon Lee17:09:00

matt levine does his once a day, monday-thursday most months and I still read it

Howon Lee17:09:51

dan wang does a yearly newsletter from china and it's still worth reading

Vincent20:09:46

That's really intriguing. What does matt levine usually write about? (i guess i can google it.. stand by.. . aha, "money stuff" )

Howon Lee22:09:44

he does comedy treatments of finance. because of the nature of finance, this means that he does treatments of criminal finance

Absolutely the most entertaining finance read out there, I found out about him during the whole meme stock / gamestop fiasco and have been reading him since...

Vincent19:09:41

in a newsletter, would you rank entertaining/entertainment among the most desirable attributes?

eggsyntax19:09:48

Personally? Not necessarily. At a first pass I'd say I want at least one of • informative about something I'm actively interested in. • thought-provoking • entertaining but they definitely don't have to have all three. re frequency, incidentally, I agree with @U025QTDFBLG that there's not a specific optimal frequency -- I don't mind frequent if each one has really interesting content. It's more about value-per-minute-spent-reading.

he's not some rando, he's ex-goldman, ex-whiteshoe law

Howon Lee19:09:15

it's the most popular newsletter at bloomberg

Just ran across this piece again, which is one of my favorite Levine posts ever, about the madness of FTX's so-called balance sheet. Really very entertaining (and informative): https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2022-11-14/ftx-s-balance-sheet-was-bad?cmpid=BBD100223_MONEYSTUFF&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_term=231002&utm_campaign=moneystuff
