Speaking of ChatGPT:

The height of the Biographie route is approximately 40 meters (131 feet) from the ground to the top of the cliff. The actual length of the route, however, is shorter than this as it follows a diagonal line up the cliff rather than going straight up.
It seems to be approaching human intelligence, and it hates math, too.

Here’s to a world without triangle inequalities.

Ted Chiang (if you’ve seen the movie Arrival, it was based on his science fiction short story “Story of Your Life.”) had a great essay about ChatGPT in The New Yorker recently that provides a clear and perceptive framing of LLMs: https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/chatgpt-is-a-blurry-jpeg-of-the-web

What’s more interesting is that it doesn’t mention that before Sharma made the complete ascent of Biographie (which he initially called Realization, and graded it 9a+) the french had established an intermediate anchor at about 2/3 height, avoiding the top crux and graded it 8c+. I would also argue that ChatGPT doesn’t know what it’s talking about, since Biographie follows a beautiful blue streak formed by water running down the cliff in a very vertical line. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful route in the world. If I were only good enough to climb it.
