found out today that my java apps (which are have evolved from java8 to java11) worked without screams on java17 too :dancer:

😱 4
kulminaator19:09:51

it was a good day

dpsutton19:09:48

Which jvm are you using

kulminaator19:09:16

for evaluation i used the one from here https://jdk.java.net/17/

kulminaator19:09:47

eventually would like to see one from adopt openjdk though

seancorfield19:09:39

Yeah, we started testing against that JDK yesterday. So far, "everything works" for our Clojure apps (we still have a couple of legacy apps stuck on JDK 8 ).

seancorfield19:09:36

We are waiting for New Relic to release 7.3.0 of their agent to see if that works with Java 17 since their current agent has reflection warnings and we know that won't run.

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:04

fyi, it's not called adopt openjdk anymore

kulminaator20:09:18

yeah noticed that rename too

dpsutton20:09:01

and apparently the jvm's name is "Temurin" which i've already forgotten 4 times. just seems very non-memorable to me

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:23

all I can remember is that it starts with a T

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:05

but I keep thinking it's like Tamarin or Tamarind

dpsutton20:09:08

i have to do sdk ls java and look for the one i don't recognize to remember it

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:33

I think there was a Tamarin VM for Javascript or something even

emccue20:09:16

whats the over/under on the rename to something impossible to remember as a mechanism to drive people to the new oracle license

dpsutton20:09:54

> Today, that choice became even wider with the release of Eclipse Temurin (that’s an anagram of Runtime, if you hadn’t noticed)

emccue20:09:14

who pays "The AdoptOpenJDK Technical Steering Committee"

dpsutton20:09:40

so its a play on words, an anagram of runtime. I would never have guessed

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:08

knowing that may actually help me remember it

p-himik20:09:30

Given Temurin's name origin, FWIW Cespile is an anagram of Eclipse.

😂 6
dpsutton20:09:18

(map #(apply str %) (repeatedly 20 #(shuffle (seq "runtime"))))
("emrtnui" "urentim" "treunmi" "mntriue" "minuetr" "unirtme" "euirmnt" "trmineu" "ireutmn" "itneurm" "eimrutn" "teunirm" "mtieunr" "tnuimre" "uemritn" "nmertui" "mntiuer" "rmeitnu" "tineumr" "etuirnm")

👏 1
p-himik20:09:57

Now roll d20 to grab your name!

2
dpsutton20:09:04

that sounds delicious

p-himik20:09:56

Some version of Android is probably named like that.

emccue20:09:56

they could have just called it eclipse runtime

Ben Sless20:09:48

If they ever name a project Griffith, I'm running away screaming

🙏 2
emccue23:09:21

(not that it would help)

😟 2
emccue20:09:06

that would actually have made some sort of sense

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:53

I think actually have something named that in the eclipse ide

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:14

all the osgi stuff at the bottom

Alex Miller (Clojure team)20:09:25

words... what do they even mean

javahippie21:09:59

I guess Eclipse are not the only offenders when it comes to “Confusing JDK names”

😱 2
javahippie21:09:42

After IBM joined AdoptOpenJDK to collaborate with their own OpenJDK J9, that was somehow not possible anymore after the move to Adoptium, so now they have their own Distribution again, which is called Semeru. Totally clear.

seancorfield21:09:39

So they had to resume distributing it themselves?

😅 4
👌 2
seancorfield21:09:06

(I can't find an "origin story" for the name but that's the only anagram I could figure out)

javahippie21:09:27

Semeru is a volcano in Indonesia, so it‘s purely geographical

seancorfield21:09:16

We had a litter of kittens all named after Indonesian volcanoes...

seancorfield21:09:46

The mom was Junglekatz Phantom Fire Of Bangles and the dad was Bangles Edmund Hillary so each of their litters was named for volcanoes in different parts of the world 🙂

seancorfield21:09:55

(fire, mountain => volcano)

seancorfield21:09:46

(sorry... but this is #off-topic after all! 🙂 )

Ben Sless04:09:30

We should start naming them after pokemon if people are going to catch them all

nate14:09:08

Could be worse. They could start picking names out of the Silmarillion.

Ben Sless15:09:53

That sounds like more of a plus

quoll16:09:50

I imagine that there are a wealth of geographical features on the island of Java that can be drawn from. Expecting to see Kawi and Betiri at some point
