Its still going to be some months until I have to interact with new people

emccue00:10:45

what are some upsides and downsides to shaving my head

Heather00:10:00

Pros: easy to care for and maintain. Cons: Cold head if it’s breezy. Wear hats!

sogaiu00:10:15

i think the hat advice may be good for other reasons too. over-exposure to sunlight can be an issue for some iiuc.

hiredman00:10:38

If you've never done it should bic it, discover the contours of your skull

hugo00:10:06

Baldness sounds like a downside

seancorfield00:10:48

I wet shaved my head every day for a whole summer many years ago. Are you planning to keep it shaved, or is this just a one-off @emccue?

emccue00:10:57

just a one off

seancorfield00:10:27

Do you have decent quality clippers to take it down to a buzzcut first?

emccue00:10:51

no clue, I have garden shears and some good scissors

emccue00:10:25

is that the process? cut the hair short, then use a razor?

seancorfield00:10:34

It'll be hard to cut it short enough all over with just scissors but you might be able to... But, yeah, cut short, then shave.

seancorfield00:10:48

You'll probably be surprised at how quickly it grows back. And it'll probably go through a very annoying "spiky" period before it gets back to a manageable length. So that's one downside I guess.

emccue00:10:19

nah, one driver is that going to a barber feels unsafe rn

emccue00:10:35

so going back to "normal hair" quickly isn't exactly a huge downside

seancorfield00:10:48

Then maybe just a buzzcut rather than a shave? Buy a decent set of electric clippers online. They should have guards for the various standard lengths. I like a "3" but that would give you the option to experiment.

seancorfield00:10:13

And with clippers, you don't even need to cut your hair to start with -- you can use clippers even on long hair.

seancorfield00:10:54

It's much easier to use a razor on very, very short hair. Trust me.

seancorfield00:10:34

I buzz mine down to a "3" a couple of times a year, but took it down to a "1" when I wanted to actually shave it.

seancorfield00:10:03

(we'd should probably take this to a thread or DM -- even for #off-topic this is pretty OT 🙂 )

andy.fingerhut00:10:14

off OFF topic 🙂

Darin Douglass00:10:39

So....ON topic?! philosoraptor

Mno10:10:26

I can't think of a reasonably objective/reliable metric for "on-topicity".

Mno10:10:15

I guess one could potentially split it into vague categories of off topic.. Like off-topic-code, off-topic-hardware, off-topic-misc.

borkdude10:10:34

I would say that's the fun of off-topic, anything goes, as long as it's off topic

scriptor12:10:24

Agreed. No reason that off topic means it should still be programming related or something

Faris13:10:09

What could be more off-topic than discussing the definition of off-topic 😆

Mno15:10:34

Personally I do like reading about people’s corona hairstyles here or anything else, it’s part of the charm. Something different.

Mno15:10:58

Just got curious what options/alternatives existed.

Mno15:10:39

If anything I’d like to believe discussing the definition of off-topic in off-topic is about as on-topic about off-topic as off-topic could get. If it gets a lot of attentions I guess you could call it a “hot-topic of on-topic off-topic topics” 😏 (and now topic looks weird to me)
