@retrogradeorbit I buy into the thought that a well designed, possibly fun, 500 or 404 page saves a company customers

emccue00:02:48

So the parallax seems to serve a purpose

(no actual research behind that thought though, at least that I accurately remember)

Just noticed this in my VPS' ToS: "We do not tolerate the following activities on our servers: [...] IRC activity (client, server, bot, etc.); [...]" I can understand every other item (no hacking, no DoS, no public proxies, etc) but I cannot understand this one. Why would a VPS provider want to avoid having an IRC service on one of the servers?

Exoscale for sure allows it if you're looking for an irc friendly service. We use irc extensively for ops/communication.

p-himik06:02:18

Thanks! Although I was just perusing the changed ToS, I'm not actually interested in IRC ATM.

solf04:02:33

No idea, but could you share the name of the VPS provider so I can avoid them?

p-himik04:02:35

You should just read ToS before you decide to use any provider. :)

solf04:02:01

still, it would mean one less ToS to read 😛

Crispin04:02:55

Do people still use IRC for warez? That would be an overreaction seeing as you could use almost anything for distributing warez.

p-himik04:02:00

Distribution of illegal/icky content is in a separate clause.

jsyrjala04:02:00

botnets sometimes use IRC for communication

sogaiu05:02:15

how about the idea that there was at least some time in the past when irc servers used to get ddos-ed a lot? i don't know how things are these days...

p-himik05:02:51

It specifically prohibits even clients and bots though.

sogaiu05:02:35

perhaps just lawyers trying to make it easier to write things? fwiw, there is some discussion here about irc prohibition: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/151725/why-hosting-providers-hate-irc

p-himik05:02:10

IMO the comment saying that "it's likely that they didn't take the time to come up with their own AUP or TOS and just copied it" makes the most sense.

p-himik05:02:26

> because IRC is outdated and lame. Facebook messenger is what we need Or this. :D

sogaiu05:02:29

lol i agree that the just copied thing is likely

Proper off topic - it snowed today in estonia, properly the first time this winter, about 8-10 cm of snow in a night

I thought I saw some announcement that the Cognicast was back, but I can’t see any episodes anywhere. Was I dreaming or am I looking in the wrong places?

sogaiu06:02:20

i do not see any new episodes here: http://blog.cognitect.com/cognicast/ and i also remember there being some statement recently to the effect that there might be new epsiodes before long
