Did you know? Before there was Instagram, people used to worship the Sun

sova-soars-the-sora14:11:42

(catching the sunrise is the most blind inspired i've felt)

Much more generally, for any year X, most things occurred before year X πŸ™‚

sogaiu17:11:03

are there any channels to discuss particular conference talks / express thanks to the speakers?

nmkip17:11:52

hi sogaiuu ! Did you watch the apocalypse talk?

sogaiu17:11:38

i'm still processing it -- but i very much enjoyed mark bastian's previous "bottom up, top down" talk -- so i hope to continue to digest this latest one πŸ™‚

nmkip17:11:07

Oh, I started watching that one and never finished it. I totally forgot about it πŸ™‚ thanks

sogaiu17:11:18

he he -- so many good talks!

sogaiu17:11:23

not enough time

sogaiu17:11:33

if you have any interest at all in gc, i really found @alexyakushev's talk really helpful -- his site http://clojure-goes-fast.com/ is wonderful too

nmkip17:11:35

What's gc?

sogaiu17:11:41

garbage collection

nmkip17:11:52

That was one of my guesses

sogaiu17:11:59

good guessing πŸ˜‰

nmkip17:11:06

I'll look at that site later. I keep stacking things to read and watch

sogaiu17:11:28

what we need is something that can auto-slice/-pick things out from these stacks and feed them to us at good times

sogaiu17:11:42

on a more serious note, i've started to try watching just 5-10 minutes to get a sense of things so i have some idea of the content -- possibly to return to later

nmkip18:11:34

I do that with some talks when it's late

sogaiu18:11:18

has that worked well for you?

nmkip18:11:59

If I like the video I download it and watch it when I'm traveling or when I have some spare time at home

orestis18:11:17

Perhaps we could have a ClojureVerse topic per talk?

borkdude21:11:32

Has anyone on a Mac here upgraded to Catalina? Any dev-related surprises? Maybe some tips?

littleli21:11:41

if you use any tool that is a 32bit binary, that no longer works. Update brew before update. Some applications will ask for permissions (again) during run. Sometimes screensharing issues but that is related to permissions as well.

I upgraded when it came out. Did a clean install. Still on my todo is to transfer my photos and music from backup and not sure how that will work. The messaging around untrusted gui apps scared me at first (it might be more dire sounding?). "Oh nos", I thought. But then a right click and open solved that. There's more security pop ups asking if you are ok with an app doing something. But I don't see that as bad. Let's see what else? zsh the default shell now... I was using that before tho... and had no problem installing oh-my-zsh.

After updating I got a weird error message when trying to update the Xcode command line tools but was able to quickly resolve it with google and a re-install via a downloaded pkg

slipset12:11:57

The root partition is no longer writable.

slipset12:11:04

So I had used /data to store, well, some data. After upgrade this was conveniently moved to ~/Desktop/bla bla/Security and I was no longer able to create new directories on / even as root.

borkdude13:11:48

I have some data outside my home folder in /foo to prevent backup programs from picking it up
