anyone moved from Macbook Pro to Thinkpad + Ubuntu? I’m considering the T490

CarlaD09:06:40

@borkdude I've been really happy using an X250 and X270 with Ubuntu. If the Thinkpad model is super new you might want to check that it's compatible with the version of Ubuntu you want to use.

Conor09:06:23

XPS15 + Pop OS rather than Thinkpad + Ubuntu, but I don't miss paying £1000 extra for my laptop

borkdude09:06:03

PopOS any good?

Conor09:06:33

Yes, seems very nice. It's basically Ubuntu but nicer IMO

sveri09:06:05

well googling for popos at least gives interesting results

mpenet10:06:40

I am really curious about the next pixelbook personally

mpenet10:06:26

I have a lot of good thing about the previous model and a 3:2 screen is appealing

borkdude10:06:17

it seems pixelbook will only support up to max 16GB RAM, I need more

mpenet11:06:41

current version yes, next one no one knows yet

mirza1b3911:06:26

check xps (developer edition)

mirza1b3911:06:16

but thinkpad will be the best option

borkdude11:06:17

I’m wondering about the battery time of the T490 if you take the WQHD display

mirza1b3911:06:37

did u check some reviews?

borkdude11:06:39

yes, some guy on Reddit only had 2.5 hours but some Youtube reviews say 7 hours while surfing the web

borkdude11:06:42

so it seems experiences vary. when I run a lot of GraalVM compilations on my Mac it’s also empty before I know it, so I guess it really depends

dpsutton11:06:10

The T480 allows for two batteries and hot swapping them. Can get that with 32 gb

borkdude11:06:00

t480 weighs a bit more (1.58 vs 1.46), I really like a light laptop with still good performance. typical usage for me is working 2 or 3 hours at a coffee place, then charge at home. so I guess it’s ok

borkdude11:06:19

also you can connect a USB-C powerbank (not sure how well that works)

dharrigan12:06:32

I use a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Extreme. Works wonderfully with Arch Linux (and by extension, JVM/Clojure)

borkdude12:06:26

@dharrigan I can find the Thinkpad X1 Extreme and the Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but they are not the same I guess?

dharrigan12:06:06

No, the X1 Carbon you can't upgrade once you've bought it. X1 Carbon Extreme, you can swap out the memory, ssd

dharrigan12:06:14

X1 Carbon, they're solidered in.

dharrigan12:06:51

I bought basic X1 Carbon Extreme, then added my own SODIMMS and and extra NVMe drive, at a vastly cheaper price 🙂

dharrigan12:06:07

so my x1 carbon extreme has 64gb ram and 2 NVMes

dharrigan12:06:14

(one of which runs zfs - ftw :))

borkdude12:06:39

@dharrigan cool. do you have a link to the lenovo site for that model? can’t find it even using their search…

dharrigan12:06:37

(I'm in the UK, so if you are in the UK just google lenovo x1 carbon exteme uk)

borkdude12:06:55

that says X1 Extreme, but no Carbon, that’s what I meant earlier 🙂

borkdude12:06:17

how’s the battery with that model?

dharrigan12:06:28

ah you're right, sorry, no carbon on the extreme, same chassis however 🙂

dharrigan12:06:42

Battery lasts well. You can use thinkfan on Arch (and other distros) to manage

dharrigan12:06:52

but I'm rarely away from a power socket 😉

jaide18:06:33

Hi there, I wanted to share my experience contributing to nREPL since it’s the first major lib I’ve contributed to and with relatively low amount of Clojure experience. I had drafted an article here [Edit: http://e69e7464.ngrok.io/blog/contributing-to-nrepl.html] but wanted some feedback. Does it feel worth the read or is it contemptuous narcissism?

gklijs19:06:33

I enjoyed reading it. I also think there can't be enough of this kind of articles, as I think it would open the door for more people to contribute to open source.

jaide20:06:28

Thanks for the feedback. Any part stick out in a negative way?

gklijs19:06:44

Not really.

andy.fingerhut18:06:00

Your localhost is different than our localhost 🙂

jaide18:06:51

Thanks for catching that. Cannot believe I just missed that 😛

andy.fingerhut18:06:19

unless you are offering accounts on your system to readers

Eric Ervin23:06:21

I enjoyed reading that. Honestly skimming it, but since it was so nicely factored into small paragraphs, it was easy to see where it was going. I would make the title more general, something like "Learning to contribute in Clojure." I don't know, something witty. I don't think it matters that it involves nREPL or the cmdline. Might even put off people who don't care about those things.

Eric Ervin23:06:51

I think I only read it because I recognize you as an outstanding eccentric in the local NYC community. Otherwise, no nREPL for me.

jaide03:06:21

That is excellent feedback, thank you!
