What does everyone use for software news. I don't think I can use hacker news anymore.
I'm thinking about just sticking to "the morning paper" and being ok with missing out on trending xyz thing.
I use Zulip to follow r/Clojure and the Clojure-focused HN feed (however it does that) but I don't pay it a huge amount of attention. I use the Microsoft News app on my phone for more general tech/science news.
I use https://lobste.rs/ less often than I should, but when I do go it feels like a much better version of HN
I've heard a couple of people mention lobsters... but not for a while...
I mainly get software news by twitter, it's very selective and I don't get a lot of noise since it almost the single thing I use twitter for. And sometimes https://dev.to/ which is nice.
Regarding the “can’t use” thing - it’s personal, of course. For me, I have an expectation to read maybe 20% or less of articles/posts that flow by, pretty much regardless of site or person doing the posting. So, my goal is to have a quick way of browsing headlines so that it’s little effort to skip past most things. (Right now, fwiw, that means text-only RSS headlines.)
Hmm, thinking of it, Slack is less good than other UIs as I have to manually go into all channels with new posts. If I care. Need to look into APIs (but they are proprietary and for pay, so..). I’m trying to use Slack less for various reasons anyway.
Enable All Unreads
and then you'll have a single place to view all unread messages -- except for channels you've muted (which show up in the sidebar but not in unread).
What a simple and beautiful idea and implementation. Thank you for sharing 🙂
