That smells to me like the services are divided along poor seams

fellshard00:06:07

Or that you may be able to extract new services

3Jane06:06:43

@lilactown what you’re describing is what the previous architectural version of microservices used to be (RMI / RPC)

3Jane06:06:21

without knowing your setup I would say that yes, smells like badly divided logic

3Jane06:06:32

shared library, while doable, in practice results in a hidden monolith, since sometimes you need to update multiple services at once, in a specific order of dependency, etc.

3Jane06:06:23

By adding business logic to data layer I assume you mean database; the main reason I’ve seen people protest against this is poor migration / stored procedures versioning practices; plus potentially efficiency.

3Jane06:06:43

You could, however, add an intermediary service that stands in front of the database (and whatever else your data layer consists of, like external apis, or whatever) that contains the business logic and serves data to further components having already applied whatever transformations you want.

taylor13:06:40

anyone going to #strangeloop? registration starts in a few hours

dpsutton14:06:34

I had the best ice cream sandwich of my life at strange loop

dpsutton14:06:36

There are myriad other reviews highlighting how good the conference is but the quality of life better sessions, parties, venue and hotel are outstanding

dpsutton14:06:52

Better should be "after"

Alex Miller (Clojure team)14:06:35

where was the ice cream sandwich from?

Alex Miller (Clojure team)14:06:51

research may be required

dpsutton14:06:53

Don't remember. It was 2016

dpsutton14:06:20

You provided then after a session

dpsutton14:06:56

It was a very pleasant surprise

Alex Miller (Clojure team)14:06:01

hmm, I don’t remember that. which doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

scriptor14:06:54

I did enjoy the ice cream (or was it froyo?) from last years’

scriptor14:06:06

strangeloop’s amazing, although I kinda like the smaller and less hectic feel of the clojure confs

eggsyntax17:06:18

What's the approximate attendee ratio for SL vs Conj? Anyone?

seancorfield18:06:03

I believe SL is north of 1,200 and Conj was around 400? Those numbers may be a few years out of date.

Alex Miller (Clojure team)14:06:45

we usually have Ted Drewes

Alex Miller (Clojure team)14:06:32

which is actually custard, not ice cream

Alex Miller (Clojure team)14:06:11

not that they’re much different

dpsutton14:06:03

From their website

dpsutton14:06:08

Cookie Sandwich Ted's famous frozen custard sandwiched between two Dad's Perfect Scotch Oatmeal Cookies. A tasty treat.

dpsutton14:06:14

I think this was it

dpsutton14:06:10

I remember m and Ms on the cookie but memory is not trustworthy sometimes

mikerod15:06:11

Ted Drewes is a pretty famous St Louis thing I believe (used to live there)

michaels15:06:55

Ted Drewes is my favorite.

andy.fingerhut16:06:07

Ted Drewes is the first place my wife drove when she got her driver's license. I go there on most of my visits to St. Louis. Can't believe I grew up in Illinois near St. Louis but never heard of Ted Drewes until I was a teenager.

taylor16:06:46

I'm real big on 🍦 and programming so I think I'm about to hit the Buy button

dpsutton16:06:05

confirmed with my friend who went to strange loop with me: the ice cream sandwich was amazing

Drew Verlee16:06:58

Has anyone been to the the ICFP (the international functional programming conference)? Im thinking about booking a day before the pre-conf.

Drew Verlee17:06:00

i’m getting the impression most of the talks assume a good amount of background in the subject.

Drew Verlee17:06:34

oh, it seems the talks are all based off research papers… I suppose if i wanted to be picky it would be nice to know which ones were on which days

Alex Miller (Clojure team)17:06:14

I don’t think they have a schedule that detailed yet

Alex Miller (Clojure team)17:06:21

you can always add icfp days later too

Alex Miller (Clojure team)17:06:32

although I guess that impacts your travel plans

Drew Verlee17:06:08

Thanks @alexmiller. I’ll delay the choice tell i have some time research.

eggsyntax17:06:18

What's the approximate attendee ratio for SL vs Conj? Anyone?

donaldball18:06:58

Has the likely city been chosen for the 2018 conj?

seancorfield18:06:03

I believe SL is north of 1,200 and Conj was around 400? Those numbers may be a few years out of date.

4
Alex Miller (Clojure team)18:06:12

SL was 2100 last year and Conj was maybe 450? 500?

4
Alex Miller (Clojure team)18:06:28

conj announcement should be coming out soon, maybe today

borkdude19:06:17

@seancorfield You should try Dutch Clojure Days next year, around 300 people, awesome 😉

seancorfield20:06:57

The expense of travel makes that impossible unfortunately @borkdude

borkdude20:06:58

I was half kidding (but the conf is free though), but I agree with you that I like the small-medium sized conferences. Same with concerts…

seancorfield21:06:33

Yup. I stop going to see bands when they start playing stadiums, for the most part. We've seen Bob Dylan in a couple of tiny venues in the Bay Area: much better than stadiums/arenas.

seancorfield21:06:14

Mind you, most of the bands I like never get popular enough to play big venues! simple_smile

borkdude21:06:17

Yes, I never saw Rush for that reason… too crowded… and it’s unlikely they will go on tour ever again.

Alex Miller (Clojure team)22:06:41

you missed out! their last tour I took my youngest to go see them as his first rock concert (as they were his favorite band at the time). while it was not my perfect set list, it was a great show.
